Day 44

Finally, we finished north gable by overcome lots of confusion. We put up the center piece. We learned from south gable. Made little bit off square which would be parallel to east piece. Scab them first, and made both square at the same time. I was thinking oh we improved. Much smoother than last one. Then this west piece upset us again. We measured right, cut right. Studs were square. But, when we stand it up, the edge was 1/4"higher than the other. How can it happen! Bob, the math teacher was confused from this result. So what we did for this was, put this wall down again, took top plate off from some studs. And Decided height we want is priority over it been square. The place we scab is sunk in just a little, but that's ok. It's just tiny bit off. I just announce this to everybody here, but after we cover everything, nobody would notice it, and we won't even remember. Just it left scar on math teacher's heart. Anyway, we finished big gables.

ついに次々とぶちあたる壁を乗り越え北の切妻完成しました。まずは真ん中を立ち上げる。南の切妻から学んだので、少し直角から外れていても，東側の柱と平行ならその状態で二つをつなげてしまい，それから両方一緒に直角を出す。南の切妻から成長の兆しが見えると思ってたらこの最後の西側でまたしても手こずる。柱は全部正しく計れていて，ちゃんと切れている。しかもちゃんと直角にたっているにもかかわらず真ん中とうまく合わず少し高い。なんで！ボブは数学の先生なので計算通りにでなかったことで頭から湯気を出している。で，どうしたかというと西側をもう一度床に倒し，いくつか柱をトッププレートから外す。直角よりも高さを優先させることに決め，また組み直していく。つないだところで少しだけ沈んでいるけど、ほんの少しだけだし大丈夫。ついここでみんなに言ってしまったけど、内装外装が終わったら誰の目に留まることもないし，私たちも記憶力が悪いので忘れてしまう。後はボブの心の傷が癒えるのを待つだけ。とにかく大きな切妻はこれで終わり。

Then we started west side gable. This gable is smaller. Since scabbing gave us hard time, we decided to make as one piece. This south west corner is the place roof meets as valley. We all sit down there, tried to figure it out. We had some scrap boards and square on hand, and talking out loud same thing again and again for a while until we get to know what we need to do. On this gable, the last stud on south will be a same height with higher side of this west end piece of south gable. The last stud on north side of this gable will be end same as other gable ends. So a center of this gable will be a half way from outside of south gable, and north end of this gable. We marked and got height of all studs we need include center and window. Then realize it doesn't match with south gable. We waste other time to find out what's wrong. We marked center wrong.... Flip the board, and remark recalculate center and south board. Ok, it's end up a little bit tall, but let's compromise and call it a day.

それから西の小さめの切妻に取りかかる。いつもいくつかに分けて作って，つなげるときにややこしいことになっているので一つで作ることにした。この南西の角で屋根がつながり，谷ができる。もひとつどうしたものかわからないので，三人で頭を寄せ合う。視覚化させて理解しようと手にはいくつかの角材と直角定規，何度も同じことを口に出しながらシュミレーションする。よし，何となくどうしたらいいか見えてきた。この切妻の南の端は，南の切妻の西の端の柱の高い方の高さになる。この切妻の北の端は他の切妻と同じように終わる。ということは頂点は南の壁の外側からこの切妻の終わるところの中心になる。窓と中心を含め全部の柱を書き込み，高さを出したところで，南側とうまく合わないことに気づく。あれやこれやとまた考え直し，中心を計り間違えていたことに気づく。板をひっくり返し，もう一度計り直す。結局妥協できるくらいまで近づけた。今日はこれでやめ。
