Day 134

Last time when we had a big rain, the water came into our basement from north east corner. We had professional did foundation tile for us. They put tube with lots of holes, and grabble over it along the outside of basement floor. The water supposed to drain...... I can't believe it's already over the capacity!!?? We built a porch on north east. So the ground wasn't settle there compare to other place. When we had the rain, lots of water run into that soft ground. Maybe... If we need to fix the tile, it would be a big big big headache.

So the way we can think of to prevent water not to run into there is to do the final back fill. The plan is to fill the ground along the house where it's settled down after months. Also make a nice slope from northeast to southwest, and from house to the yard. we made the ground leveled where the studio would be, too. Well this was the easy part for us. We were just watching.

先日久しぶりの大雨が降ったとき、地下室の北西の角あたりから水があがってきた。基礎の周りの排水管工事はプロに頼んだのに。彼らはちゃんと穴開きのパイプの上に砂利を敷き詰めてたし、水は通るはずなんやけどな〜。もう既にキャパ越え？！！北西にはポーチを作ったので、雨が直接降らないため、ほかと比べると地面はしまってない。大雨が降ったときにスカスカの地面の方に水が流れ込んでしまったのか。。。どうなのか。もし、このタイルを直すとなると、えらいことになる。

ということで、今できる、そして冬がくる前にしてしまいたいこととして、最後の埋め戻し作業を頼んでいた。一回目に埋め戻しをした後、雨などで地面が沈んだところにもう一度土をつめる。北東の角から南西の角に向けて水がはけるように坂を作る。家から周りに向けて水がはけるように坂を作る。そして、作業場を作るあたりを水平に整えてもらった。と、ここまではまあ楽チンな作業。なんといっても私たちは見ているだけでよかった。

When the time comes to under the porch...... we had to move dirt by our hand. And this is the place we are worried the most. So we want to make sure it have a nice slope. It was a lot of work.... We need to keep bending our back while we do this physical work doesn't sounds fun at all.

そして、ポーチの下に来ると、機械では届かないので、私たちが自力で埋め戻しをする。しかもここが一番心配なところ、どこよりも高くして、水が流れ込まないようにしなければ。ポーチの下なので、ずっと腰を曲げるか、ひざまずくかの体勢で、シャベルを使って土を動かす。何とも大変なマッチョ作業。
We had two big mountain in front and back. He use the one in front to shape the ground. The one in the back was the rich surface dirt. In the end, he covered all up with nice dirt.

今まで家の前と後ろに二つ大きな山があった。表にあった土をすべて土地の形を整えるのに使ってしまい、裏にあった工事を始める前は表面にあった豊かな土を最後に上に散らしてもらい、完成。
Wow, it covered all tar work we did for the basement wall. Now this house looks normal, not like long neck house.

わーコンクリートの壁にはみ出していたタールの後も全部埋まってしまった。これでやっと首長の家ではなくて、普通の家に見える。

Day 133

Today, we actually start putting insulation in this high ceiling. We started from center, laying ladder on collar tie one next from the one we work on. I was on second floor hall way on small scaffolding. We found out this is not so difficult. We were be able to reach almost all of the part by Bob standing on ladder and me standing on scaffolding. Also when the ladder is on edge of collar tie, he can staple 2/3 top of angle insulation. Look at this!! We did it! Also after we worked on this house for few month, we are not chicken anymore. It was long time ago when we scared this height.

今日はこの高い吹き抜けの天井に断熱材を入れていく恐ろしい作業を始める。まず真ん中から始める。実際に断熱材をつけるのの隣のカラータイにハシゴを立てかける。初めて見ると思ってたより何の問題もなくこなせる。私が二階の廊下ぎりぎりに置いた足場に立ち、ボブがはしごに上るとほとんど全体に手が届く。しかもハシゴを東側ぎりぎりまで寄せると斜めの屋根部分の上２／３まで手が届く。これみたことか！何とも美しい。この家でを自分たちで立て始めて数ヶ月、私たち、もうチキンではありません。この高さにビビってたのはいつのことやら。

We reached lower part with yellow ladder. Don't forget this triangle wall too. Impress!

下の部分は黄色のハシゴで手が届く。この小さい屋根裏を遮る三角壁も忘れずに。あっぱれ！

Day 132

Today is the day... We are going to try this dining room ceiling, and see what we can do without scaffolding. First of all, before we put up air channel, we need to drill holes on blocking we did there. Before the OSB on the roof, the rafter was too flexible. To keep the rafter in position, we nailed this wood blocks in between each rafters about in center height of collar tie and wall. However it also block the air to go up. We thought this is the easiest part, but unfortunately it took forever. Working on this awkward position in lots of saw dust shooting his eyes made him cry. After the drill, we put up the air channel, and tried staple the insulation, too. This didn't go well. From this position, he won't reach to the top. Need to think better way. At least we did air channel.

いよいよ今日はこの吹き抜けにチャレンジ。ハシゴだけでどこまでできるか、とりあえず試してみる。まず一番最初にすることは穴開け作業。屋根に合板を貼る前、垂木をまっすぐに固定してしっかりさせるため、斜めの屋根部分のだいたい真ん中らへんに支えの木を入れていった。この一つ一つに、空気が流れるようにいくつかの穴をあけていく。これが一番簡単な作業と思ってたのに、この不安定なハシゴの上で大量のおがくずと戦い、ボブ泣かせの作業となった。ようやくすべてに穴が開いた後は、ピンクの空気路をつけていく。ついでに断熱材もつけてみるが、この位置からではあまり上まで届かないし、どうもうまくいかない。別の手を考えなければ。最悪空気路はつけれた。

While he is working on dining room, I was in a safe position. Sorry. I did entertainment room walls.

ボブがハシゴの上で苦しんでいるときに、私は安全なところでの作業。エンターテイメントルームの壁に断熱材をつけていった。
This is our first floor, basement gas furnace.

Day 131

Since we insulated knee wall, upstairs behind of knee wall are considered as a outside. So we need to insulate parts of ceiling in kitchen, mud room, and library. Also put small insulation on each end of the insulation on ceiling. So the cold air doesn't move in.

２階の内壁に断熱材を入れるので、内壁より外側は外とほぼ同じ環境になる。ということで、そこに接するキッチン、裏口、リビングの天井の一部にも断熱材を入れる。その端に短くきった断熱材をふたをするように入れる。これで冷たい空気は流れ込まないはず。

We won't finish this basement for a while, so we decided to use shop light for now. It's nice and bright, but at the same time it shows how dirty this basement is. This will be my studio for a while. So I need to clean soon.

地下室はしばらくは手を付けないのでコンセントでつなぐ蛍光灯を照明に使う。知ってはいたけど、明るくなって初めてどれほど汚いかがわかる。しばらくはここが作業場になるので近々片付けなくては。

Day 131: Septic tank

While we were working inside, there was a big change in outside. Finally we got septic system! They dig a big hole yesterday. And today in the morning, they brought this big concrete box. I remember when I was kid, I went to a big sewage disposal plant for the field trip. I had never dreamed I will have my personal sewage disposal plant.

私たちが室内で作業をしている間、外は大きく変わっていた。ついに汚水浄化槽を設置してもらった！昨日来て、庭にでっかい穴を掘り、今日は朝一でこの大きなコンクリートの箱を運んできた。子供のときに工場見学で下水処理場に行ったのを思い出す。あの頃は庭に自分専用の下水処理場を持つとは思っても見なかった。

It's a heavy concrete box. However it will float, if it gets heavy rain. So we filled water. This is the first time we get running water in this house!

この重いコンクリートの箱も、いっぱい雨が降ると浮かび上がってしまう。なので早速水を満たしておく。今日がこの家で初めて水を使った日。

Day 130

Finally we got a new box of scale siding! Weather is nice. We can finish outside today!!!! We got used to seeing house wrap on our front triangle. But this is much much much better, isn't it? We were thinking we are going have so much left over from this box. But end up we only have few left.

ついに待ちに待った鱗サイディングの箱が届く。天気もよいし、今日で外は完成か！ハウスラップで覆われた正面の三角に見慣れて違和感がなくなっていたけれど、やっぱこの方がずっとずっとよいではないですか。後何枚かで覆えるし、いっぱい余ると思っていたけれど、結局何枚かしか残らなかった。
John installed outside J-blocks for exterior lights, and plug. Cut out a square on siding for the J-block. Then use simple metal tool to take siding a part. Then screw the J-block and put back the siding together. It's fun to watch.

ジョンが外のランプとコンセントのためにJブロックたるものを取り付ける。まずサイディングをJブロックにあわせて四角く切る。で、何とも単純なサイディングを取り外すだけのための道具を使って、取り付ける部分のサイディングを開く。そしてJブロックを滑り込ませ、ねじで止め、元通りにサイディングを戻す。なるほど。

MFA people brought a small trencher. Dig the line from the pipe they install the other day to the gas tank. They looks futuristic in some reason. If they have glass balls on their head, they looks like fixing rocket, or installing a observatory machine on the moon.

ガス会社の人たちが小さな塹壕機を持ってきた。先日設置してもらった室内のパイプの延長からガスタンクを置くところまで溝を掘りつなげる。タンクのせいか何となく未来的。もしガラスの金魚鉢なぞかぶっていたら、ロケット修理か月面観測器設置作業をしているように見える。

Day 129

Before MFA bring a gas tank, we burned the scrap pile we had there. We made a big fire. It reminds me of ancient firing experiment I did in the school. After ancient people discover a fire, they realized that the ground after fire gets harder. Then they start making shape by clay, and stuck dried clay pots and start a fire. It is low temperature firing but enough to make hard like bisqued piece. You can get beautiful pattern from fire. Next time when we make fire, I will prepare my work for that. We found comfy insulated mouse house under the scraps.

私たちがゴミの山を作っていたところのすぐ近くにガスタンクを置くつもりなので，ガス会社がまたくる前に今日燃やしてしまうことにした。でっかい火を見て学生時代にした野焼きを思い出す。昔の人が火を使い始め，たき火をした後が他より固い。。。土でものをうける形を作って乾かして、火で焼いてみよう、といったところで始まった。温度は素焼きくらいまでしか上がらないけれど、不思議な火の跡がついて渋くあがる。次回何かを燃やすときは何か作っておこう。スクラップの下に断熱材で作った快適なネズミの巣発見。
We hear the drilled sound. And oh no somebody drilled two holes on our roof.

ドリルの音が聞こえて、あ〜誰か屋根に穴開けてる〜！

They are for the sewer pipe for sewer gas.

これは下水管の、下水ガスを出すパイプ。

This is Japanese ancient pots called "Jomondoki". The name came from the pattern they made with rope. This type of pot called "Kaendoki" is for festival. They imitate frame pattern.

Day 128

Finally we closed the bottom of cantilever on west side. It was library floor, and guest room floor. We put insulation here and closed with treated plywood. After we finished all south half, and finished insulate north half, we realize we mistook......... Ah! Usually we install Kraft paper on our side. If it is wall, we push in fiber glass between studs, and stapled kraft paper on studs. This paper in warmer side is to make vapor barrier there. From our habit, we insulate this cantilever kraft paper our side. But this time, upper side is the warmer side, and the bottom is closer to outside and closer. Now we need to take all of this insulations, and boards, and start over. Well, this is not the first time...

今日はついに片持ち梁で飛び出しているリビングとゲストルームの床下を閉じることに。飛び出ている２フィートに断熱材を入れ，屋外用に加工されている合板で閉じる。リビング完成，ゲストルームの断熱材をほぼ全部入れた後に，またやってしまったと気付く。イー！今まで，紙のついてる面を自分たちに向けて断熱材を固定していた。壁の場合，ファイバーグラスを先に柱の間に押し込み，最後に紙をホッチキスで固定する。この紙は防湿層として，暖かい側につけるもの。いつもの癖で，外から床下に断熱材を押し込み，紙を留めた後合板で覆ってしまった。今回は上が暖かく，下が外に近く冷たいのではじめから全部やり直し。。。。またしても。。。

On east side under the floor, is like this. We need to insulate between each I joists with kraft paper in warmer side.

東側の床下はこんな感じ。それぞれのジョイストの間に短くきった断熱材を紙を暖かい方，内側に固定していく。

Day 127

More and more insulations. This is study room, west parts of the master bed room. We got a wonderful idea about running air to attic the other day. Initially we were going to insulate and close the porch roof all the way with sheetrock, and make a small triangle wall behind of the closet. This is to make second floor heating area where behind of the knee wall as inside. So even if out side is freezing, air duct is in part of inside. However, we decided to leave one porch rafter open, and make this triangle wall north of that rafter. Then insulate this triangle wall, and rest of knee wall. This way there are enough air easily come in from the open space in between the last porch rafters, and go up through the air channel on north west study room rafter. Also the other closed area we were worried, the south west corner. We will insulate knee wall. And install smaller vent in south gable wall. This way, the air come through this vent will go up from this small closed room to the study room attic and main attic. Hmmm smart. Now this house can breath well.

断熱材の作業を進める。この写真は寝室の西の一部。この窓の両側の屋根裏部屋に風通しの穴がないのでどうしたものかとしばらく放置していたのだが，ある日かなりよい考えがひらめいた。エアコンを置く２階の廊下にあるクローゼットの裏は，ポーチの屋根とつながっている。最初の案はこのポーチの垂木の間をすべて断熱材，石膏版で閉じてしまい、三角の壁を作って断熱材を入れ、この小さな屋根裏を室内にする予定だった。これでここを通る空調管が室内に設置されていることになるので，外がかなり寒くても問題ない。で，案はというと、このポーチの屋根とつながる穴をすべて閉じてしまうのではなく，一カ所だけ残しておき，その北側に三角の壁を作ることである。エアコンを置く物置はほんの少し狭くなるけど，これでスタディールームの北側には十分に空気が入り，そのまま上に流れる。この小さな空間は内壁に断熱材を入れるので屋外とほぼ同じ状況になる。そして，もう一つ空気の入り口がないと悩んでいた南西の角。ここも内壁に断熱材を入れ、南の壁に換気口を取り付けることに。これで，この空間も外とつながり，この換気口から入ってくる空気が屋根裏へと流れることになる。これでこの家は十分に空気の流れる家になった。
Started entertainment room too. Look we got faucet on first floor bath tub. Unfortunately, the hand shower was broken. We need to wait for the new one comes.

娯楽室も断熱材を入れ始めた。また，一階のお風呂に蛇口がついた。シャワーは配達のときに壊れていたことが発覚。またしばらく新しいのが届くのを待たなくては。。。

Day 126

We started insulate master bed room. Start seen more like a ceiling.

２階の寝室での断熱材作業。カラータイに断熱材がついてくるとさらに天井らしい。
Rick is working on first floor bathroom. There are small legs along the bottom of this bathtub. What if one day we get really really large, we would feel the bottom sunk every time we move. So we set the tub on mortar on big plastic. This way the bottom is nice and steady. Also today Mfa gas company came to install this gas pipe in inside of house. It have one T part. One pipr goes to kitchen stove, the other one goes to basement heater. Usually in the afternoon, I take my time and work alone. Today there are 6, 7 big men at once. In the beginning I thought I am the boss of everybody, but found out everybody were my boss.

リックが一階のお風呂場の作業をしているところ。このお風呂の底の外側には小さな足がいくつかついているのだけれど，もしいつか私たちがものすごく太ってしまったら，これでは底がベコベコと動いてしまう。太っていなくてもベコベコしないようにビニールの上に広げたモルタルの上にお風呂を設置して固めてしまうことにした。今日は午後になってガス会社の人たちがきた。今日は家の中のパイプを通す作業。Ｔ字の部品を一つつけて，一本は床下を通ってキッチンのコンロにのびる。もう一本は地下室に設置するエアコンにつながる。いつも午後は一人でゆったり作業をしているのに，今日は急にいっぱい人がきて，わたしがみんなの指揮官になると思いきや、いろいろ質問されるし、ボスが何人もできた気分。

Day 125

Snow day! This is the first snow day here in Barnard. So people around here knows how much this post is behind... This house looks pretty in snow too!

今年初めての雪！と言えばこの辺の人はどれだけアップデートが遅れてるかわかるはず。。。この家なんとかわいらしい！
The faucet we bought for this clawfoot tub was too short. The spout comes right above the over float hole. So I made a box that sticks out 2" from the wall. Cut the full stud we had there to the height, and use 2x6 instead of 2x4. Nice easy solution.

足付きタブのために用意した蛇口が短すぎ，タブには届いているけど，お風呂から水が溢れ出ないようにするための穴の上にちょうどきてしまう。なので、蛇口、ハンドル，シャワーのくるところに２インチ壁が突き出るように箱を作ることにした。そこにあたる２x４をバスタブくらいの高さにきり，短い２x４を横に通して固定，そこに２x６を縦につけた。よかった，割と簡単に解決。
We finished insolation in mud room.

On top of dining room around the corner of collar tie and rafter, we will have a ceiling fun/light. John is uncomfortably laying on collar tie to work on the electricity for it. However, when we install this would be after sheetrock, after paint. The only way we can reach is from scaffolding.

裏口の部屋に断熱材を貼った。

ダイニングルームの天井が斜めの屋根と交わるあたりにファン付きの電気を吊るす予定。ジョンがカラータイの上に寝転がり，そのためのコードを通す。実際にファンを設置するのは内壁がついて，部屋のペンキ塗りをした後になるので，足場を組むしか方法はないよう。

Day 124

The photo above is the wall we made under the basement stair couple of weeks ago. We thought this is the last wall we need to make in this house. What were we thinking?! One side of the stair would be a storage area. The other side would be a living area.... it will be a project after few years, though. So we needed to have a actual wall to divide storage and this future living area. After all work we did few weeks ago, here comes us taking this a part, and rebuild this wall that reach to the ceiling like the photo below.上の写真は何週間か前にこれで室内の壁完成！と思って作った地下室の階段下の壁。いったい何を考えていたのか。この壁で片側は物置，もう片側は何年かじゅうに完成させる予定も未定の住居スペースとを分ける。ので、この壁は天井までつながってないとあかんやん。と言うことでここにきて斜めの壁を取り壊し，作り直し。

We got heating and cooling air duct in several spot. Most of the place in the U.S. have central heating system. Not like Japan that have air-conditioning in each room, or stick everybody's feet in one heated table covered with blanket called Kotatsu, we will have two big air-conditioning one for up stairs, the other one for 1st floor and basement. Kotatsu sounds stinky, but I think it gives a nice Japanese winter taste in the room. In this season, some people become like a hermit crab, only live in the area that you are be able to reach your hand from your body in this Kotatsu.

いくつかの部屋の床に冷暖房用の通気口がついた。アメリカはほとんどのところがセントラルヒーティングシステム。日本のように部屋ごとにエアコンが設置してあったり，こたつではなく，この家では２つ大きなエアコンを設置する。一つは２階用。もう一つは一階と地下室。

Water pipes organized. It looks like strange bug. In front of the wall we made today, we will have washer and dryer. It looks like a funny face worm.

水道パイプが整理されて，虫のような姿に。今日作った壁の前には洗濯機と乾燥機を設置するので，そのためのパイプも通った。バカボンにでてくる毛虫みたいなんこんなんじゃなかったけ？By the way, this is Kotatsu. You can eat, you can sleep. You don't even need to move.
Some train in cold region turn into Kotatsu train.

Day 123

Putting more and more insulation. We did guest room today. It just a paper, but feels like inside wall. This process goes very quick. We feel accomplished.

今日も断熱材の作業を続ける。今日はゲストルーム。紙で覆われているだけだけど、壁が貼られたような気に少しなる。作業がはかどるので達成感があって良い。
The first floor bath tub, finally it's out of disintegrated box. We got blue and red pipes for hot and cold water here. And it leads you to the basement.

ついに崩れた段ボールから出された一階のバスタブ。青と赤のパイプが通って、お湯と水の道ができた。これをたどると地下室につながる。
We have spaghetti in our basement.　地下室に麺が垂れ下がる。
