Day 111

We got trencher today for the electricity line, and water line. The machine is not so big, but have several tools on it. First of all, he drove in from out side of fence, and dig wider line from our house under the electricity box to electricity post. John put plastic pipes under ground. Now we just need to wait to get permanent electricity we applied few days ago. I heard sometimes it take one month to get line, though.

溝堀機が電気と水道を通しにきてくれました。そんなに大きな機械ではないけれど、いろんな機能がついていて、これ一つあれば大半のことができそう。まず最初は、フェンスの外からまわってきてもらい、割とガッツリと電気メーターのつく箱の下から電柱まで掘る。その後ジョンがプラスチックのパイプを埋めて、後は何日か前に申し込んでいた生活電気がくるのを待つのみ。一ヶ月ほどかかることもあるらしい。
After he took care the electricity, he used trencher on back which looks like a big chain saw to dig thin, but deep line for the water. This time he walked next to the machine, and control from the side. It was impressive. Beautiful line.

電気の後は、トレンチャーと呼ばれる後ろについているでっかいチェーンソーのような形の機械で水道管のための細くて深い溝を掘る。トレンチャーを使うときは機械の横を一緒に歩き地面から操作する。簡単にきれいな溝ができた！While he worked on out side, we worked on second floor master bedroom wall. Finally we got a wall here, but this room is still big. In Japan, people live only in this one room with tiny kitchen and bathroom. This room gets a lots of natural light. I really like it. So we got this high wall on both side of the dining room. There is an idea one side will have Josh's father's portrait, the other side will have my father's portrait. Well, dismissed. I want this house to be relaxed space... But there are enough space for us to draw something big, or hung picture for sure.

彼が外で作業をしている間、私たちは室内の壁の続き。今日はついに二階の私たちの寝室の壁ができた。壁ができても、この部屋は広く感じる。日本の学生ワンルームマンションくらいのサイズか。この部屋は自然光がいっぱい入って明るいかなりいい空間になりそう。ということで、ダイニングルームの両サイドに高い広い壁ができた。誰かさんから片側にジョッシュのお父さんの、反対側には私の父のでかい肖像画を掛けては、という案が出たが、却下。いつも見られてると落ち着かないものでね。ともかく、大きな絵を掛けれる壁ができた。

DAY 110

Today we started from an easy wall, just square to divided from stair hall way. Yes it was too smooth for us. About to stand all walls we had made include second floor bath room door wall, entertainment door wall, and this square wall we just made, we found one mistake. Of course. We made this square wall too long. So we cut and fixed it, and ready to attach to other wall. Then we found another mistake. The entertainment door we made was too close to inside corner. There are no place for the trim. We just thought through outside wall when we made it.... So we cut nails and redo the rough opening for the door again. This time we measure wall thickness which is 3 1/2" + 3" which is about a trim size, that is the place where starts rough opening. Mark it, and nail it. Hmmm, something is not right. Now it is too close to the other side. We sat down and scratch our head. Is this mean we can't have this size door?? Then we found the place we mark was right, but the place we set wasn't right. So we cut the nails and redo it. Deja vu...

今日の作業はただの四角い簡単な壁作りから。これは階段の壁の延長になる。いくら簡単な壁とはいえ、あまりにスムーズに行き過ぎ。今まで作った２階のお風呂場のドアのある壁、エンターテイメントルームのドアのある壁、今作った階段の壁を立ち上げかけたところ、やっぱり。失敗発覚。階段の壁を長く作りすぎた。のこぎりで短くして、釘を打ち直し、別の壁とつけかけたところ、またもや失敗発見。エンターテイメントルームのドアを外側を測って作ったため、内側には飾り枠をつける幅がない。釘を電気のこぎりで切って、今度は間違いなく、３１／２インチの壁の厚み＋飾り枠の幅３インチのところに印を付け、ドア枠をそこから始めて釘を打つ。う〜んなんかおかしい。。。今度は反対側に飾り枠の隙間がなくなってしまった。ここでいつも通り座り込み頭をかきむしる。これはこのサイズのドアは使えないってことか？？ってとこで、印を付けたところは正しかったけど、設置したところが間違ってたこと発覚。打ったばかりの釘をまたしても切り、ずらしてやり直し。あ〜デジャビュ。。。
After all of our struggling, we did it! To be honest I liked that open space in up stairs we had, but I like this hallways and rooms more. Our entertainment room was 9" smaller than we planed accidentally, but it is bigger than we thought we need. Bathroom is not too compact and comfortable size.

悔しいかなやり直しを重ねた結果できました！実を言うと今までの２階のオープンスペースも好きだったけど、この廊下と部屋がある方が好き。エンターテイメントルームは、かくかくしかじか９インチ計画より小さくなったけど、このくらいの大きさがいいなーといっていたサイズよりも大きい。お風呂場も小さすぎず、心地よいサイズ。
We even started our master bed room wall, too. We accomplished a lot today.

なんと私たちの寝室の壁まで作業を進めれた。達成感！

By the way, this 365 days was so quick. Last October 24th, that's the day we had a fire, and lost our apartment in Chicago. Things changed, and it's getting better. Day before yesterday, we had a interview for my green card. We brought some evidence of our marriage, and realize we actually have some evidence not just history. It was kind a fun to tell our story with photos to somebody who don't know about us at all. It was like a small talk at a party to first met person, but lots of details enough for normal people to get annoyed.... maybe.

ところで、この一年はやたらと早かった。去年の１０月２４日はシカゴで住んでたアパートが火事になった日。いろいろと変化のあった一年で、どうも良い方向に転んでるよう。一昨日ジョッシュと二人で私のグリーンカードのためのインタビューに行ってきた。結婚している証拠たるものを用意しているときに、改めて、一緒に生活している日々だけでなく、夫婦生活が書類としていろいろと存在してきていることに気づく。写真を見せながら初対面の人に自分たちの馴れ初めやら、同居生活、旅行話、結婚生活などをするのも割と楽しめた。パーティーでのスモールトークのようやけど、普通の人ならいらつくほど細かい情報がある会話。か？

Day 109

Today at first, we worked on steps for stairs. When we put step board on this three boards we cut yesterday, the center board was almost 1/4" to 1/2" higher. Oh no, how that happen?! We tried to find a way to make them same height like putting shim board in, or look for the way to cut some part off... Then decided to try switching center and one on the side in some reason. And some kind of miracle happened. Turned all three are same height, no gap, and steps are leveled. We don't know how that worked, but good, nailed as soon as possible. We thought we have a lots of scrap wood, but after all we used most of them. we don't have enough 2x6. So we used two 2x4 instead. Maybe we should've work on stairs earlier. It's so convenient.

今日はまず最初に階段に板を貼る。まず昨日切った三枚に板をのせてみたところ、真ん中の板が１／４から１／２インチほど高い。なんで！外側の板にくさびを入れてみたり、真ん中の板をどうにか切って同じ高さにするてはないかとしばらく考えてみる。とりあえず何となく真ん中と外側を入れ替えてみることに。すると、ミラクル、三枚全て同じ高さに、しかも水平もきちんと出た！なんで！？とりあえず何かが変わらないうちにと急いで釘でとめてしまえ。いっぱい切れ端の板があると思っていたけど、知らん間にほとんど使ってしまっていた。ので、この階段は２x６じゃなく２x４を２枚で足場にする。階段って便利、こんなことなら早めに作れば良かった。
Then we worked on second floor walls. It's been a while to work on wall. Ah- we found out we forgot how we did it... This angle wall reminds me when we were working on first gable wall....

その後２階の壁の作業の続きをする。壁作りは久しぶりで、あーどうやってたっけ？やたらと時間がかかってじれったい。この斜め壁は切妻部分を初めて作ったときの半地獄を思い出す。
Holt moly we found this scary black on the roof! Guess what it is? It's thousands of flies! And we have several spots that coverd with this black shadow. Since outside get cold, they came in. Now there are 5 thousands of flies live in our house! Before us! At least they give us "guess what shape is this" game.

ワー、こんな黒い固まりを屋根にいくつか発見してしまった！何でしょう？何千匹ものハエの固まりでした！外が寒くなってきたのであったかいとこに入ってきて固まってる。私たちが住む前に５千匹くらい既にハエが住み込んでる！最悪何の形でしょうゲームして遊べるけど。

Day 108

It will be pretty cold this next couple of days. Also electrician John is going to start some work soon. So we decided to go back to work on stairs today. And if we can finish rest of inside walls in this week, we can ask other plumbing, heater people to come in to start. The request from most of them was that at least to have stairs. We cut the board that already had cutting line. And put that on another board to trace. Then realize how much bowed this first wood was... So we nailed to the next wood to keep it force straight, and traced it. Since first board was so badly bowed, we decided to cut 3 more, and not to use that first one. We didn't want to make copy of copy. But at the same time, I thought that if every time when we try to force the first wood straight to trace, it would be difficult to make them same shape. So other two boards are copy of the second one.

ここ何日かかなり冷え込むのと、電気工事をしてくれるジョンが作業を始めるというので、今日からしばらく屋内作業、階段を作ってしまうことにした。もし今週で残っていた壁を全部作ってしまえたら、水道、電気などの作業を始めてもらえるかも。彼らからは最悪階段は出来上がってること、と要望がある。まずドレイクが引いておいてくれた切り取り線に添って一枚切り、それを次の板にのせて線を引く。ところが、型になるはずの最初の板がものすごい反っている。とりあえず釘で無理矢理まっすぐになるよう打ち付けて線を引く。あんまりに最初の板が曲がっているのでもう三枚新しく切って、最初の一枚は使わないことに。ここで、コピーのコピーを使いたくないのはやまやまだが、毎回曲がった板を矯正するたびに少しずつずれてしまうのが目に見えているので、２枚目を型に残りの２枚を切った。
While we were working on stairs, John worked on setting breaker in our basement. From this inside breaker box, the wire continue to outside box. Then it will connect to the main

transmitter through underground.

私たちが階段作業をしている間、ジョンが地下室にブレーカーを設置する作業をしてくれた。地下室のこの箱から外にある箱に線が延び、そこから地下を通って電柱に到達する。
In the afternoon, I finally finished the siding on the porch! Hmmm, it looks good.

今日の午後の作業でついにポーチ部分の外壁完成！う〜ん良い感じ。

Day 107

Today was just me and Josh. We were hoping to finish this north side gable today. But I don't think so. Just do what we can do.... At least we started angles. This side is plane. So it is easy, no need to measure the detail. But we need to move east to west to east to west to east...

It was strange cloud today. This cloud looks like the air there was vibrating.

今日はジョッシュと二人だけ。昨日は今週末で北と南の切妻を全て終わらすと意気込んでいたけど、昨日も思いのほか時間がかかって鼻隠しも終わらんかったし、今日も、そうはいかんやろ。ま、できるだけこなすしかない。最悪切妻部分の斜めにはさしかかれたし、よしとしよう。この北側は特にややこしいところがないので、あまり細かく測り、切る必要がなくやりやすい。代わりに、東から西まで行ったり来たりその都度はしごを動かさないといけない。

今日は一日変な天気だった。この今まで見たことない雲は空気が上下に振動してできているように見える。

Day 106

It's been a while to set up this scaffolding. We set up on south side gable top. We need to do quick review for several process we did here. Started from looking for staples and house rap we cut before. After house rap, we installed a gable vent. The shape of the gable vent is octagon, but we just need to cut square. It is uncomfortable to see Josh is using skill saw in that high.

この足場を組むのも久しぶり。今日は南の切妻を終わらすべく意気込む。が、ここは高すぎてサイディングをつけるときに一緒にしたらいいやと残しておいた作業がいくつかあるので、まずは今までした作業のおさらいから始める。まずホッチキスと以前切っておいたハウスラップを探すところから。ハウスラップの後は切妻につける換気口の設置をする。外側は八角形だが、壁にあける穴は四角で良い。あの高いところで丸鋸を使うのを見るのは身の毛がよだつ。

After the gable vent two people climb up the scaffolding, measure and nail the siding. One person stay on the ground and cut. It was a good team work. It is almost done. However, unfortunately we couldn't reach the very top, and facia board... We need to think other way... Well, at least most of the part was covered, and looks beautiful!

換気口の設置が終わると、二人が足場に上り、必要なサイディングを測り、釘を打っていく。もう一人は地上に残りサイズ通りに切っていく。なかなかのチームワーク。後一歩というところまで終わったものの、一番頂点には届かない。サイディングの後する予定だった鼻隠しの板カバーにも届かない。うーん、どうしたものか。ま、ともかくほぼ覆えて、なかなか美しいできじゃないですか。

Day 105

To be ready for the weekend, we put more siding on south side. So tomorrow we can set the scaffolding and finish the south gable up. Finally we can cover this exposed triangle wood tomorrow. Above the window is going to have another layer of house rap, so the rain doesn't go in.

週末に備えるため，南の切妻の作業を進める。ここをできるだけ進めておくと，明日足場を組んで南の切妻を完成できる。ついに明日むき出しだったこの三角を覆える。窓の上にはもう一層ハウスラップがかぶさり，より雨に強くなる。

In the afternoon, I worked on this north west corner. Get ready to put more siding for north gable. And closed this small soffit area. I found a solution for the catch 22 situation the other day. I was be able to nail from this side. This side was not like east side, I needed to cut small piece of soffit as a last piece, and nailed it, and hide the nail by F-channel.

午後になって北西の角の棟の天井板をはめ，北の切妻の作業がスムーズに進むように枠を作る。そこで先日のボブの堂々巡りに決着が付けれること判明。こちら側からならあの小さな箱の中でも釘が打てる。こっちの角は東側と違い、棟の天井の一番最後の一枚は短いのを切って，うまくはめ込まなければいけなかった。一番端に釘を打って，釘をFチャンネルでかくして完成。
