Day 75

It was wonderful day today. We finished putting rest of ceiling rafters. Then Started cutting rafters from the pattern we made yesterday. We cut them all and put them all on! In this few hours we have in the morning. All the rafters fits perfectly include bird's mouth cut, not like main rafters we suffered. There are few rafters that twist badly, but when we attached to the ceiling rafter, we could straightened a little bet. We put rafters till end of beam. We have one foot of over hung each side. We will make a part called lookout on both side for that over hung. What a nice house! We accomplished a lot.

今日は何ともすばらしくはかどった日だった。残りの天井を支える垂木をつけ終え，昨日作った屋根の垂木のためのパターンにあわせて切っていく。桁の端にくる垂木まで全部切り終え，つけ終えた。苦しんだメインの屋根の垂木のときとは違い，鳥口カットも含めて，ぴったりと合っている。いくつかねじれたものがあったものの，天井の垂木と固定するときにだいぶまっすぐに直せた。両サイドに軒が１フィートあるものの、それはルックアウトと呼ばれる方法で作る。なんてかわいい家！達成感！

Day 74

In the morning, the roofing people put up boxing on the parts of west roof. Today it was only two people. But they carry the heavy board alone. So it would be same with 4 of us. One person stay on the roof, telling the other one the measurement. The other person cut the board on stuck of boards with shallow blade skill saw, and pass it to the other. They work so smooth. Since they had scaffolding around the porch, we decided to start working from afternoon. They only did some of boxing, but they will come back next next week end to finish it. So we have enough time to finish the porch.

朝、屋根張り職人たちが西の屋根の板張りを半分ほどしてくれた。前回は４人いたけれど，今日は２人。でも，それぞれが重い板を一人で運ぶので，私たちが４人いるようなものだ。一人が屋根の上で、必要な板の長さを測り下の人に伝える。下の人は板の山の上で直接刃の浅い丸鋸を使って軽く切って上の人に渡す。なんともスムーズ。私たちが作業をしようとしていたところに足場を組んでいるので私たちは午後から始めることに。今回は西側一部の板だけ張れたが，来来週続きをしに戻ってくる予定。それまでにはポーチはできるはず。
Inside looks kind like a barn. This is the valley. One board and other board meet up beautifully.

内側は納屋の屋根に見える。下の写真は谷になるところ。板と板がきれいに真ん中であっている。
In the afternoon, we started working for the porch. The ceiling rafters for the porch will come right under the main rafter. So we cut the main rafters short with skill saw. We put up beam on the posts in front, screwed 2x4 on front wall, nailed hungers for ceiling rafter. The ceiling rafter will flush with outside beam. We toe nailed and use hurricane strap to attach them. Few left, but we call it a day. It was very good weekend with a lots of accomplishment as you can see.

午後になってポーチの作業をしだした。ポーチの天井を支える２x４は，メインの垂木の真下にくる予定。なので東側とあわせて長めに残していたメインの垂木を丸鋸で切っていく。先日作った桁を柱の上に固定し，２x４を壁に水平に太いスクリューでとめる。そこに２x４をとめる金具をつけていく。その後，天井の２x４を桁の外側までくる長さに切り，片方はその金具に，もう片方はトウネールとハリケーンストラップでとめていく。何本か残して今日はおしまいにする。この週末は見ての通り、かなりはかどった良い週末だった。

Day 73

Tomorrow Roofing people is going to come back to do parts of west side. So our plan today is to finish over hung, facia board on all gables. In the morning we made ladder shape. Bob came from afternoon, and cut this strange angle for south west corner. I was little bit worried even if Bob had a confident of this angle. Most of the things I can understand and clear so far. But this south west angle is the only place I couldn't understand even if he explained to me. I understand the angle he cut, but couldn't get why that angle. That's ok. That's why we need all of us to build this house. After we put up south over hung, we needed to cut the edge a little bit more. But when it is in the place every thing looks all clear. Now I can see the other angle too. This is confusing valley corner. It's all matched up now. Yhay!

明日屋根張り職人たちが西側のできるところをしにくるので，今日は残りのひさしと鼻隠しをすべてつけ終えるところまでという計画。朝ひさし部分のはしごの形を作る。最後の部分を切るのは、午後から参加のボブに託した。南西の角に来るこの理解不能の角度は彼に任せるしかない。実を言うとボブは自信あると言っていたけれど，私はちょっと疑っていた。これまで，知らないことだらけだったけど，全部理解してきた。でも，この角度だけはいくら説明されても理解できなかった。切っている角度がなんでそうなるかはわかるけど，なんでその角度かはわからず。ま、でもそれやしこの家建てるのに三人みんな必要なんやろう。南のひさしをつけた後少し切って調整しないといけなかったものの，設置してみると西の切妻用のひさしの角は私でもわかった。下の写真が悩ましの角。今は全部完璧にあってる。やた！
We finished everything we planed. Beautiful! We haven't had this nice progress day for a long time even if we were tired after long day. Finally weather is perfect!

予定したことはすべてやり遂げた。すばらしい！長い一日で疲れていたけれど，こんなに作業のはかどる日はしばらくなかった。ついに気候も完璧。

Actually, we started today from 5:30 in the morning to take our friend who visited us to the amtrak station in Kansas city. When we left home it was completely dark with full of stars in the sky. On our way there we had beautiful sun rise. When we driving back the cloud looks like dragon scale with shining background from sun. Around the time we start working on house, it was fresh clear blue. It was very nice day.

First thing we did in the morning was to get the feeling of roofing by ourselves. We stand on the scaffolding roofing people left. I have no idea how they walking around on here. It was impossible to do this with my shaky legs...

実際，今日の私たちは朝５：３０に訪ねてきていた友達をカンザスシティーまで送るところから始まった。家をでたときは真っ暗に満面の星空、車の中で劇的な日の出、帰ってくるときに一帯の鱗雲。本物の竜の鱗の様で逆光でえらくかっこ良かった。作業を始める頃には透き通ったきれいな青空だった。なかなか良い一日。

朝一番初めにしたことは屋根張り職人の残していったはしごに上り体験してみることに。やたらビビってしまい，この震える足の私では到底無理だったと改めて確認した。

Day 72

Today is the roofing day! We had a friend visited who is from Tronto, Canada traveling across the U.S.. So we couldn't stair at them roofing, but we had a nice day off instead. They started from 6:30 in the morning. If we were roofing this house. We would easily take one week or more just to put board. They did that in 3 hours!! That's amazing. That's professional! We went there to see around 10am, they are already put felt on top. They nailed 2x4 on the roof. So they can walk around. That's how you do it... Since east side is the back side, we got roof vent, too. After felt, they put long aluminum thing on edge. This hides all of our gaps and everything. Then put single on top. When they do around porch roof I would like to see their all process.

今日は待ちに待った屋根張り日！私たちは昨日の晩からカナダのトロントからアメリカ横断の旅をしている友達が来ているので，作業をする代わりに良い休日をとった。彼らは朝に６時半から開始。もし私たちがするなら一週間以上かかるであろう板張りを３時間で終わらしてしまった。すごい！これがプロの技か！私たちが１０時くらいにちらっと見に行った時は板は張り終え，フェルトと呼ばれる黒いシートで覆っていっていた。屋根の上に２x４を足場としてとめ，その上を歩くようにしていた。なるほど。。。東側は裏側になるので、屋根の換気口が並んでいる。フェルトの次は長いアルミ製のものを端につけ、心配していた隙間やなんやを隠してくれる。その後瓦ではないが，シングルをつけていき終わり。ポーチあたりの屋根をしてくれるときはずっと眺めれたらいいが。

While they were working we did Skyscraper of the Midwest tour. It was fun even in the rain.

彼らが働いている間，私たちはスカイスクレーパー（ジョッシュの本）ツアーをした。

Day 71

Today, Bob had to go to doctor for a health test. We are working on this house almost 3 months. I was looking forward to loose weight, as the house build. But so far it is just a dream. Actually I can almost say that me and Josh might gain weight little bit instead. We enjoyed delicious summer food too much. Bob is the only one keep loosing his weight. However, the result was great. He said his body is the best in this 5 years. Wow, maybe he should start next house after this...

Anyway, so we didn't have time to work in the morning. Instead, we asked Dick to come over again to make our brain clear. He brought his porch plan as an example and explained us details. It helped us a lot. Now we know what to do.... so far.

In the afternoon, finally I finished the porch floor! This is beautiful floor. Then I did small thing to prepare for the next step.

今日ボブは午前中健康診断にいきました。この家を建てだして今でだいたい３ヶ月。家が建つにつれて体重が減っていく予定だったのに，その兆しは見えず，ジョッシュと私はともすれば体重が増えたと言っても全くもって過言ではない。夏はご飯があまりにおいしくて。。。ボブ一人だけどんどんベルトの穴を落としていっている。なんで！ちょっと申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱいだったけど，健康診断の結果はお医者さんが驚く程よかったらしい。この５年で最高の体を手に入れた彼は、この家が終わったら次の家に手をかけだすべきなのかも。

ともかく，それでこの午前中は何も作業はできなかった。代わりに，ディックにまた来てもらい、これからどうするかをはっきりさせることにした。ディックは彼の家のポーチプランを持ってきてくれ，それと比較しながらいろいろと説明してくれた。いつもディックがいるときはこれで助けを借りなくてもできると思ってるのに，ディックが帰ったらつじつまが合わなくなる。さて今回はどうか。

午後から一人戻り，ポーチの床を完成させる。なんともすばらしいでき。その後，次の作業に向けてなんやかんやと小さなことをした。

Day 70

Today we asked Pat, the Pastor to come over to help us, since our schedule is getting tight. Yes, sure he was so kind to help us even if he is busy. We wanted to finish east side before the Saturday roofing, we put south east over hung. Pat made his house by himself too. He brought his own hammer. Thank you very much. After he left we finished putting facia boards on east side. Now we are no hurry, made us feel better.

In the afternoon, I went back and continue the porch floor as always. Finished most of the part. I just need to do shorter part in front of entrance.

どうも予定が厳しくなってきているため、今日は朝から教会の牧師さんのパットに頼んできてもらいました。彼も自分の家を自力で建てたそう。もちろん親切にも忙しい中来てくれました。土曜日の屋根張りに向けて東側の屋根組を完成させたいので、南東のひさし部分をつけるのを手伝ってもらった。ありがとうございます。パットが去った後東の屋根の鼻隠しの板を全部付けた。これで心に余裕ができた。

午後になっていつも通り一人戻り，ポーチの床張りの続きをする。ほとんどできた。後は玄関前の小さな空間を埋めていくのみ。

Day 69

Before we start posts for the porch, we decided to make east side ready for the roof which will happen on this Saturday. We haven't put over hung on south gable, but we decided to go ahead to put facia on north side. We tried to fix north east over hung, but it didn't really work. Well, it's close enough. We covered the tiny gap with 1x6 facia board. Our first rafter is longer than others. We cut that with skill saw from a ladder. And put 1x8 facia board on tip of rafters. We need to nail facia board a little lower, so it won't be on a way for the sheeting on roof. We used triangle and scrap board lay on the rafter and check them. Some rafters are perfect, some are a little short, some are a little high. Over all, it looks good.

ポーチ作業を始める前に、来る土曜日の、屋根張りに備えることにした。南の切妻にひさしをつけるのは最低三人作業なのでまだだけど、とりあえずできているとことまで二人でもできる鼻隠しの板をつけていくことにした。先日ちょっと書いていたように北側のひさしが直角でないのを直そうとあれやこれやとしてみたものの、大してかわらない。あきらめてこのままで固定し、一番先につけるこの１x6の板でつじつまを合わせることにした。一番最初につけた垂木はほかより少し長いのではしごの上で丸鋸で同じ長さに調整。１x８の鼻隠しの板を垂木の先につけていく。屋根の板を張っていくときに垂木の上と鼻隠しの板の上がまっすぐに並ぶように、三角定規や板を上に当てて、垂木から少し下げて打ち付ける。完璧な高さのものもあれば、少し低いもの、少し短いものとバラエティーがあるが、総合的には良い感じ。

After facia, finally we could work on the porch a little. We use four posts on the floor. We will put 2x4 on front wall flush bottom with entrance ceiling height. Then will hung 2x4 from there level to the beam that we will make with 2x6 on top of posts. This will be our ceiling for the porch. So the posts should cut at the height of ceiling minus 5 1/2" which is width of 2x6-thickness of metal joint we need to use to make the posts stand. Then stand them nice and plumed with braces.

We couldn't put top beam today, but I still can work for the floor in the afternoon. Getting close.

鼻隠しの板が終わった後、少しポーチの作業を進めることができた。床の上には柱を４本立てる。玄関の天井とポーチの天井が同じ高さで続くようにする。ので、玄関の天井と同じ高さで２x４を打ち付け、そこから２x４のジョイストをつけていく要領でこれから２x６で作る柱の上の桁の上に水平にのるようにする計画。なので、柱を天井の高さー５　１／２インチ（２x６の幅）ー取り付けのための金具の厚みで切る。柱を垂直で固定するところまで今日はできた。

桁は作れなかったものの、私は午後から床張りの続きをする。だいぶ進んだ。

These days after lunch, I leave house together with the school bus driver (and the math teacher) Bob. In Japan we use public bus or bike or on foot to go to school. Actually in my case, my school was in walking distance except high school. So actually, I'm pretty enjoying this very short school bus ride. No eating candy, drinking pop allowed!

ここ何日かお昼ご飯の後、スクールバスの運転手の（そして数学の先生の）ボブと一緒に家をでて、スクールバスで現場まで送ってもらう。日本ではだいたい公共のバスか自転車で通学する。私の場合は、高校以外は徒歩圏内に学校があったため、スクールバスたるものはなかった。ので、この短いスクールバスライドはなかなか楽しい。飴ちゃん食べるの禁止、サイダー飲まない！
