Beautiful stairs!

We started finishing up stairs. We got better treads and rising boards. We wanted to have one side of tread sticks out little bit from the wall. So used router to make one side round edge like the part that sticks out to front. This machine is handy to have, but so loud. But it looks all nice and round now.

さて、階段の作業が始まりました。ホームセンターからましな一辺が丸くしてある踏み板と蹴込み板を買ってきました。踏み板は南側の壁から少し突き出るようにしたいので、手前に突き出てくる端のように、電動ルーターを使って壁から突き出る部分を一枚ずつ丸く削っていく。この電動ルーターたるもの、何となく大げさな機械に見えるものの、使える。でも、作業中はかなりやかましい。とにかく、全部きれいに丸くし上がった。
We said good bye to all treads we had for the temporary step. Then put 1x12 for both side of wall. The one goes south side, we need to trace the zig-zag and very carefully cut there. Cut the all treads to make them sticks out about 1 1/2" to the side. Fortunately we didn't need to shorten the depth.

今まで使っていた２x４や２x６のスクラップにお別れをし、いよいよ始める。まず、壁の両側に１x１２を打ち付ける。大きな方の壁にくる板はそのまま端っこだけ切って、南側の板は階段のがたがたに合わせて慎重にきれいに切る。その後踏み板を横が１１／２”突き出す長さですべてそろえて切る。奥行きはそのままでよかったのでかなり作業が楽。
Hmmm, it feels much much safer compare to the 2x4s and 2x6s. Then cut the rising board to make it fit from wall to wall. Unfortunately we had to shorter the height. And we found out some of the treads are not exactly straight. So even if we are pretty good carpenters(?) we can't make it fits perfectly.

あ〜今まで底の見えていた２x４や２x６の板と違ってなんて安心感のある階段。蹴込み板の幅は側板と面一になる長さに一枚ずつ測って切る。蹴込み板は高さもかえなくてはいけない。しかもすべての踏み板がまっすぐではないので、いくら私たちが万能大工さんだとしてもどうしても隙間が出来てしまう。
That's ok. That's why there are things like trims. To hide these gaps, for the bottom, we put quarter round trim, and flat trim for the top. And then the gaps on the side, we put little bit wider trim. Now it looks pretty good like professional made!! There's no fear to drop down to basement any more.

ま、それも大丈夫。こういうところをごまかすためにトリムってものが存在してるはず。この隙間を隠すため、蹴込み板の下の部分には１／４丸のトリムを、上の部分には平らなトリムをつける。側面の隙間には少し広めのトリムをつけた。これでもうプロが作ったよう！これで足を滑らして地下室まで落ちてしまうという恐れはなくなった。

Dining and guest room

More floors. Feel healthier when we have clean floor for where we eat. I'm not saying I eat the food that on the floor, though.

さらに床張り。食事をする床がきれいだと、衛生的な気がする。拾い食いをしている訳ではありませんが。

Also, guest room. We chose light color for the guest room since the wall is strong color. It's not Tatami floor, but feel more asia. We miss calculated the square feet. We need to get bit more to finish...

もう一つはゲストルーム。ここは壁が濃い色なので明るめの板にした。畳ではありませんが、何となくアジアっぽいか。ちょっとした計算間違いで後何枚か板が足らず、最後の一列は保留中。

Kitchen, living room, entrance, and dining room

After we finished up stairs flooring, we started down stairs from kitchen and living room. Kitchen was a little complicated because there are lots of corners, and also we needed to move refrigerator to put floors underneath. Also we have two closets there.

２階の床を終えたので、一階は台所とリビング／ライブラリーから始めた。キッチンはいろいろと角が多くてちょっとややこしい、というかめんどくさい。しかももう既に冷蔵庫を設置してあるので、それを動かしてその下にも床を敷く。台所にはクローゼットが二つあるので、そこもつなげてうめなければ。
On the other hand living room is bigger, but easier since it is just a simple square. It's all covered. No rug any more!

それに比べてリビングは広いけれど、いたってシンプル。ここももうすべて床が張れ、ラグのパズルとはおさらば。
We don't have a door for the living room. So the floor continues to the entrance. And now it get's complicated.

リビングにはドアがないので、床は玄関へと続く。ここまでくるとまたややこしい。
After kitchen, I started working on dining room. As a kitchen door, we are planning to have a cafe door like the one that a bar in western cowboy movie always have, the swing door. So the floor is continuing to dining room.

台所を終えた私はそのままダイニングの作業を始めた。キッチンのドアとして、西部劇のバーについてる、あのスウィングするカフェドアたるものを使う予定。なので床はそのままつなげる。

Sakura!

Sakura front line is over there. Cherry blossom tree we planted for our wedding ceremony is started to bloom. ...Actually, while I got lazy updating, now it is full of flowers. Someday I would like to do Barnard Ohanami like I enjoyed every year when I was in Japan. This year spring was so early.

Grade up! bedroom

We moved out from guest room, and moved into our master bedroom in second floor! We installed master bedroom door, so we can cut out the dust. Usually you install the door before you install floor because you want to make sure the height is enough for the door. But from Bob's experience, when he built his house, he needed to uninstall a door to put floor. So we decided to do doors later. But it was perfect height. We just needed to adjust level and plumb. I think it is better this way, so flooring around the door flame is much simple.

ついにゲストルームを後にし、第二の部屋に引っ越し。次の部屋は待ち望んでいたマスターベッドルーム。この部屋だけでもとドアを取り付け、出来るだけほこりが入らないようにする。通常ドアを設置するのに十分な高さを持たせるため、床を張る前にドアを取り付ける。ただ、ボブの経験上、彼が家を建てたとき、一度取り付けたドアを床を張る際に取りはずさなくてはいけなかったそうで、結局ドアは後にすることにした。高さは十分で、水平垂直を出すだけでよかった。私も多分この方が楽なのでは？と思う。ドアを後にしたおかげで、床を変な風に切ったり、ドアの足を切ったりしなくてもよかった。
Actually this is the day I brought my computer up! Now we have lots of sunlight, and more room! We used to live in the apartment of smaller size of this room and tinier kitchen, and Josh's studio room which was brother Jeffery's room.

実際、この日が私のコンピューターを運んだ日。この部屋はより広くて、光がたくさん入る。私たちが以前住んでいたアパートはこれよりも小さなベッドルーム／リビングと今のキッチンの１／３ほどの小さな台所とジョッシュの作業場、これは弟ジェフの部屋だった。

Josh's drawing table is in study area. This space was perfect for photo booth, too. Now the guest room is all yours!

ジョッシュのドローイングテーブルは西側の小さなエリアに設置。ここは写真撮影にも最適な空間。これでゲストルームはあなた用ですよ！

counter top

We got a delivery of other floor boards which will cover most of our house, a door, AND counter top! You can't imagine how long we have been waiting for this day. We are using bathroom sink to do dishes right now. Since noodle is one of my favoraite food, we use lots of water for cooking, and also lots of times need to drain hot water. Every time we run to bathroom with pot full of hot water, our cat jump into the sink and try to play with it. Phew dangerous! It would be very nice to have a sink in the kitchen.... However, the bad news came a day before the delivery. They found our the part sink goes was damaged by shipping to the store. Oh no, that was the one we wanted the most. Oh well, we just need to wait couple more weeks.... But we got other part of counter top! The counter top in the photo above was the most simple one. Since we have stop dripping edge, we needed to screw spacer on top of cabinets to bring the top board up. So we can open drawers.

この家のメインになる床板と、ドアが一つ、それからカウンターの板が届きました！ついに待ちに待ったカウンター！今はお風呂場のシンクでお茶碗を洗っているので、これでかなり楽チンになる。私の大好物のうちの一つは麺類！なので、たくさんお湯を料理に使う。麺をざるにあける機会も多い。麺がのびるとでかい熱々の鍋を手にお風呂場まで走って行くたびに、猫がシンクに飛び込み水と戯れようと待ち受ける。危険やでって言ってるのに人間語はまだ理解していない様子。ということもあり、やっぱり台所の流しがあるのはいい。。。。ところが、やなニュースが配達の前日に入る。流しを設置するカウンターに傷があるのを配達前に発見したらしい。それが一番来てほしかったのに！まあ、また何週間か我慢して待つしかない。ま、カウンターの一部は届いた！上の写真にあるのは一番シンプルなカウンタートップ。液がぼたぼたと落ちるのを防ぐような作りになっているので、キャビネットの上にスペーサーをおいて全体的にあげてやる。これで引き出しが使える。
In the afternoon, I started upstairs hallway floor. Start from taping Quiet Walk using duct tape.

午後になって２階の廊下の床張り作業を始める。まずはダックテープでクワイエットウオークをつなげていく。
Since we got counter top, I tried making empanadas from dough using left over curry kind of thing, but not really a curry. I've ever done this before, but I liked it. I will try again.

ちなみに一部カウンターが設置できたということで、早速エンパナーダと呼ばれるカレーパンのようなものを生地から作ってみる。中身は残り物のカレーみたいな、カレーではないもの。作ったことなかったけど、結構うまい。また作ろうっと。

Started flooring

We started flooring! It would be nice to have a nice floor so we can cut out the construction dust, and don't need to wear shoes everywhere. You don't wear shoes in the house in Japan. I still not used to this custom that just going in somebody's house without take off the thing that belong to outside. It's good when it emergency, though, like earthquake. Anyway, we wanted to have wood floor, but it was out of budget for us. We decided to go with laminate. It was much easier than I thought. I didn't use any glue, or nails. And it looks pretty nice!

床板はり始まりました！工事用の床ではなしに、普通の室内の床にかわるってのは大きな変化です。歩くたびに、この何ヶ月もの工事のほこりが舞う床とおさらば、どこに行くにも靴を履かなくてもよい。未だにこの誰かの家にお邪魔して土足で歩き回るのにはなじめない。地震のような緊急の際にはいいけどね。ま、ともかく、木の床板にしたかったのですが、予算外。結局ラミネートの床にしました。思っていたよりもえらく簡単。釘ものりもいっさい使わず床が張れる。いい感じ！
However, this always happen..... After I went all the way till last row, I found out there are too big gap to leave without, but too narrow to put last row in. Now I need to start over, and cut the first row..... Ah I remember this feeling.

ところが、やっぱりか。この部屋の最後の一列というところまでたどり着き始めて最後の一列を入れるには狭すぎて、入れないには広すぎる隙間を目にする。あーこの感じ覚えがある。もう一度一番最初まで分解して、最初の一列を細くする。
After few days working on this floor, work completed. Moved the pendant light we were temporary using in the kitchen. This will be our master bed room.

何日かの作業でマスターベッドルームの床板完成！キッチンで一時的に使っていたペンダントライトを取り付けた。
