Day 89

Weekend! It was a big big day for us. Roofing people came from morning to finish up west side. We were working on windows! We were still not sure how to do heavy heavy dining and library windows, and Patio door on up stairs. Well, let's just start from easier place. So we pick guest room window on the porch. First we will put black tape on bottom of the rough opening. Then silicon around. We set the window on couple of shim boards. I was the one waiting in inside with pry bar to make window plumbed. There are so many different ways to do this for different people. We weren't sure which one to go with. How convenient today we have experienced people working on the roof! Also Rick came to check us. He saw our windows, and start looking for somebody who have lifter.

週末です！今日は一大イベント、根張り職人たちが西側の屋根を完成させようと朝早くから作業開始。私たちは家を閉じてしまうべく窓を入れる作業をする。とはいった物の、めちゃ重いダイニングとリビングの窓や，２階のパティオドアをどうしていれた物か検討はついていない。とりあえず比較的簡単な窓から練習がてら手を付ける。ということでポーチの上で作業ができるゲストルームの窓から始めることに。まずラフオープニングの下側に黒いテープを貼り，残りの三辺にシリコンをつける。外から窓を入れ何枚かのくさび形の詰め木の上にのせる。私は部屋の中で金てこを手に待ち、釘を打ち込む際に垂直に保つのを手伝う簡単かつ重要な役。この窓の入れ方については，聞く人聞く人少しずつ違うやり方を教えてくれる。都合のいいことに今日は情報に翻弄されて混乱した私たちにアドバイスのできる経験を積んだ屋根職人たちがいる。さらに，リックが様子を見に来てくれた。私たちの大きな窓を見たところで，誰かリフターを持っている人を電話して探してくれた。

Roof looks going well. It is very interesting to see them. They are so quick. It's like fast forward.

屋根は見るたびにどんどん貼り上がっていく。早送りを見ているよう。

It is nice to have farmer neighbors. After a while, Mr McGeorge came with this lifter. They helped us heavy first floor dining and library windows, and second floor window, and patio door. Two people stand on the lifter holding heavy patio door, and other two stand inside helping put it in a place. It was quick quick quick! I realize this is how professional works. We are slow like turtle compare to them. Thank you very much Clay and Roger, the roof looks great! Thank you very much Rick and Mr McGeorge you relieved us of one of our big worries.

田舎に住んでいるとこんなトラクターを持って助けてくれる人が近くにいて都合が良い。しばらくするとマックジョージさんがリフターに乗って駆けつけてくれた。一階のダイニングとリビングの窓，２階のスタディルームの窓とパティオドアを手伝ってもらった。二人がリフターの上に乗りパティオドアを支え，二人が室内待機、窓をはめ込む際に手伝う。全てがポンポンポンと進んでやたら忙しい。これがプロという物か。彼らと比べると私たちは毎日亀のようにのろのろ作業してたのね。クレイ，ロジャーさん屋根が貼れて良い感じ、どうもありがとう。リック、マックジョージさんもありがとうございます。これで一つ悩みの種が減りました。

Inside look

So we got windows in! This is our library. In front of little window, we will make a built in sofa.

ついに私たちの家に窓が入りました！これはリビング／図書室の窓。小さい方の窓の前には作り付けのソファーを作る予定。
This is dining room viewed from entrance. We put big window, so we can get nice sun light to the up stair hall way too.

これは玄関から見たダイニングルーム。吹き抜けになっているので２階の廊下まで光が入るよう大きな窓にした。
This is our kitchen. in front of this window we will have a sink. We also have a big window for the door to go out. Eventually we will make screen room under the second floor deck. Well, it will be next year project though...

これはキッチン。窓の前には流しがくる。写真には写ってないが，右側の壁に外に出れるドアがある。これも窓を兼ねているので大きなガラスのはいったのを選んだ。多分来年この南側に２階の寝室から出れるポーチを作って，その下がキッチンから続く網戸のはいったポーチになる予定。ま、それは先の話ですがね。

Right now in this stage, we can see patio door and one window in up stairs from dining room. It will be our bed room. I think it is cool view from here, but it will cover by wall there.

今の段階ではまだ壁を全部作り終えていないので，ダイニングから２階も見える。２階に見えている左の窓はパティオドア、右側には小さめの窓。ここが私たちの寝室になる。この状態絵になる。

Day 88

Continue putting house wrap. Today we did north side and south side except south side peak. We got much better today. Beautiful!

今日もハウスラップの続きをする。南の切妻の頂点を残して全部覆えた。昨日と比べてずいぶんとうまくなった。なんと美しい。
In the afternoon, finally worked with mortar. Mixed mortar with water and pushed it in between bottle and bottle. It was not like clay. It was so rough and hard to keep it in the place. The mortar try to sunk down in between necks. I tried to let it stay for a while, but I gave up. I will just fill in the gap tomorrow. I miss this time, just sit down alone, listening music, making something I see in my head. Hmmm, be patient, we can get a studio soon...

午後になってついにモルタルの作業にかかる。モルタルを水と混ぜて瓶の間を埋めていく。粘土と全然違う。やたらともそもそで全然引っ付いてくれない。首のところでは重力に逆らえず落ちてきてしまう。しばらくがんばったけど，今日完成させるのはあきらめて，明日隙間を埋めることにする。あ〜この一人で座って音楽でも聞きながら，黙々と頭にある物を作っていく時間が懐かしい。制作できる環境ができるまでがまんがまん。

Day 87

We decided to use scaffolding without Josh today. So we can finish house wrap before the weekend comes. We started from west gable. We were worry about getting strong wind and let the roof fly away. So we kept the window part wrapped. This way we can shut rain and wind out for a while before we put windows in.

週末がくる前にハウスラップを終わらせるために、ついに今日からジョッシュなしでも足場を使うことに決心。西の切妻から始める。もしまた強い嵐が来て，風で屋根が吹き飛んでしまうと困ったことになるので、窓の部分は覆ったままにしておくことにした。これでしばらく窓を入れれなくても，雨と風を防げる。
The person who stand on the scaffolding was always Josh. Now I know how he felt on here. Shaky! When we had the window part on second floor open, we could grab there. But once we covered it up we just needed to believe this is not so far high.

足場に乗るのはいつもジョッシュだったので，簡単に下から命令できたけど，今は彼がこの上に立ってどんな気持ちだったか想像できる。足震える。２階の窓の部分が空いているときはそこを掴んでおけるけど，そこを覆ってしまったら、そんなに高くないやろと自分に言い聞かせるしかない。
In the afternoon, I attached the neck part with silicone, and nail all board together. It's all nice and tight.

午後になって今日は瓶の首の部分をシリコンで固定し，板も釘を打って固定した。これで，しっかりと動かない。

Day 86

Today we made bathroom entrance wall. It took so long to built this small wall. The reason why we needed to scratch our head so long because The plan we have and actual wall doesn't match.... We made closet too wide there. But I think that's the only place we can stand that wall. Well, that's not a big deal... We moved bathroom door as close as we can from closet door. Still we need to move entertainment room wall 9" smaller.

今日は２階のお風呂場の入り口にあたる壁を組み立てた。この小さい壁を作るのに頭をかきむしりながら午前中いっぱいかかってしまった。設計図と実際のサイズが違う。クローゼットを少し大きめに作ってしまった。うーんでもそこしかキチンと立てれるところはないはずやし。ま、いっか。お風呂場の入り口をできる限り西側に寄せて、それでもエンターテイメントルームを９インチほど小さくしなければいけない。
In the afternoon, I finished carving top and bottom board enough for the bathroom rough opening. Attached bottles with silicone each other and to the bottom board.

午後になって，上下の板をラフオープニングにあう高さまでやっと削れた。ボトルの底と側面をシリコンで固定する。

Day 84

Our valuable weekend was ruined by rain.... The roofing people was going to finish on Sunday, but too much rain. We had our cat throw walking vomit up, I mean worms, on Saturday night. So we brought them to vet for the first time on Sunday. So we only could work tiny bit. Then Monday today, this thick fog in the morning. However it clear up later on, and turned out beautiful day.

私たちの貴重な週末は雨で台無し。屋根張り職人たちは日曜日に出直して，すべて張り終える予定だったのが延期に。次の土曜日までお預け。私たちの飼っている猫のウィンストン君が動くゲロを土曜の夜に吐いた（というか寄生虫）ので日曜日に初めて動物のお医者さんに連れて行くことに。聞くところによると、犬や猫など小さい動物には最近馴れだしたお医者さん。なので，せっかくの週末でしたが，ほんのちょっぴり作業できただけ。そして今日，月曜日は朝からかなりの濃霧がでていた。しばらくしたらさ〜っと霧が晴れだし，うって変わってよい天気になった。

We worked on inside hall way wall. We have closet here. The plan we have and actual room was different. So we remeasure the boards we marked yesterday. The caller tie we nailed was too low. There is no room for 2x4 as a top plate on the wall. But that's not a big deal. We will use 2 layer of OSB instead. We made this piece in two parts. We stand this wall against the corner of rafter and caller tie, and made it plumb. However...... in some reason, when we stand second part up parallel all the way with the knee wall, we couldn't make plumb. So we cut the corner of the board on top of the wall little by little until the wall get plumb.

今日は２階の廊下の壁を作ることに。ここにはクローゼットがくる。実際の空間とプランがなぜかしら違うため、昨日測っておいた板をもう一度測り直した。カラータイが少し低すぎたので、壁の上にのせるはずの２x４の隙間がない。ま、それもたいしたことはないと言えばない。２x４の代わりに壁や屋根に使ったOSBを二枚重ねて代用する。まず二つに分けて作った壁のうちの一つを垂木とカラータイの交わるところにあわせて立ち上げ，垂直を出す。二つ目を立ち上げたときに内壁と平行に立てるとなぜかしら垂木にぶちあたり，垂直が出せない。なんで！理由は解明できないけど，壁の上の板の角を少しずつ落として、最終的には垂直に立てれた。ほっ。

After the porch floor, my afternoon project is to make a bathroom window out of wine glasses. This few days I'm keep carving 2x4 for the place for wine bottle to sit.

この間まではポーチの床張りが私の午後のプロジェクトだったが，それも終わり，今はお風呂場の窓作りをしている。ここ何日かワインボトルを立てるための凹を２x４に彫る作業をしている

Day 83

It's Saturday! The day for roofing. However it was wet day. Didn't rain till afternoon, but feel heavy. Anyway, they finished boxing, and started putting felt and shingle from porch roof. It should be lighter than Japanese ceramic roof tile, but still pretty heavy. They had several cushions on the roof. We were wondering how did they walked around 45 angle roof. It was the secret. Before the shingle, you can nail 2x4 for your foothold. However once you shingle you don't want to make holes there. So this is how they did it, and it was eureka! for me. Because of the big friction between shingle and cushion, you are be able to stand on there without sliding down. It is very simple and smart tool.

待ちに待った屋根ふき土曜日！しかしながら、いつ雨が降ってもおかしくないどんよりし続けた一日。実際午前中は雨は降らなかったものの空気が重い。ともかく、残りの板を張り終え、まずはポーチの屋根からフェルト、その上にシングルと呼ばれる屋根板を止めていく。瓦よりはもちろん軽いけど、それでも一袋担ぐのは私には一苦労。屋根の上に大きなスポンジがいくつかある。ずっと疑問になっていたどうやって４５度の急な屋根を行き来するのか、に対する秘密がここにあった。屋根板をはる前なら六ツ割などをいくつか打ち付けて足場にできる。がいったん屋根板を張ってしまうと、穴は開けれない。このスポンジの上に立つことで屋根とクッションの摩擦で滑らない。これは何ともユリイカ！なんてシンプルで賢い道具！

This west side have lots of complicated detail places like valley, cricket, porch roof, compare to flat east roof. Even if they worked all day in wet day, it took longer than they thought. So our roof is covered by boards, but not by shingles.

この西側は谷間があったり、クリケットがあったり、ポーチの屋根があったりと単純な東側と比べて細かいややこしいところが多々ある。一日中働いてくれたが、予想以上に時間がかかったとポーチの屋根あたりで今日はおしまいになった。ともかく、屋根全体に板はのった。
