Day 101

This weekend we worked on porch ceiling. Attic need to have a good vent. We will use soffit that have many holes every 5th one. So, we nailed OSB there except the place vent soffits come. Siding work spoiled us. Felt this OSB are very heavy.

今週末はポーチの天井に板をはる作業。天井裏に空気が流れるようにしなければいけないので、５つに一つは穴のたくさん開いた換気用の天井板をはる。なので、木の板は換気用の板がくる以外のところにはる。外壁の作業は軽くて、それに慣れてしまった私たちは、この板が重くてしょうがない。
While we were cutting OSB, Bob worked on this tiny but complicated box on north corner of the porch. There is small part of main roof right next to side wall of porch roof. We have tiny bit of wall we can see there. To hold soffit and siding, we need to have F-channel or J-channel, or something. When you nail this first, then you can't hammer for this side. Hmmm, catch 22. But eventually, he did figure out! Looks good.

私たちが板の準備をしている間、ボブはこの小さくもやたらとややこしい箱に悪戦苦闘。ポーチの屋根の横にほんの少しだけメインの屋根がきて、小さな軒と壁がある。サイディングを貼るにしても天井板を貼るにしても、それを固定するためにFチャンネルかJチャンネルをつけなければならない。こっちの釘を先に打ってしまったらここに金槌が入らない。もしここを先に止めると，、、こっちの釘が打てない。と，堂々巡りを続けた結果，何とか形になったよう。さすが。
Tomorrow is the day everybody need to go meeting all day. So we started working little bit on east side soffit. This is one person job. I can continue work here alone tomorrow. One side of soffit holds with F-channel on the wall. The other side is nailed to facia board with tiny cute nail, and normal nail.

明日は一日中みんなミーティングにいかなければならない。と言うことで，東側の軒の部分のハシリだけ試してみることに。これは一人作業なので，明日一人で続けられる。軒板は片方は壁に取り付けたFチャンネルで，もう片方はちっこいかわいい釘一つと，今まで使っていた釘一つとで鼻隠しの板に止める。

Day 100

We were working on this house for 100 days so far! wow it was so quick...
We worked on basement stairs again. We nailed this three boards to the hangers. Then we need to glue and nail 2x4 as a kick board to the notch we made on bottom and to the floor. Kick board is the thing to attach stairs and floor well. To nail to the basement floor, we borrow this gun from Drake.

今日でこの家での作業１００日目！はやい。。。

地下室の階段の作業の続きをする。ジグザグに切った三枚の板をハンガーに固定。その後、２x４をしっかりと固定させるためのキックボードとして、板の一番下に切り抜いたところと、地下室の床に糊と釘で固定しないといけない。地下室の床はコンクリートなので、そこに釘を打ち込めるこんな銃をドレイクさんに借りた。

This futuristic gun shape scary looking tool is pretty powerful. It came with nails with plastic parts attacked, and strip of bullet. I was the only person who get to hear the instruction. It sounds easy. But once we tried it, we realize I didn't really understand how to use it. So we search internet from cell phone, and try to figure it out for a while.... It took like 30 minutes, but we did it. Eventually we want to have oak wood steps not carpet. So for now we made steps with scrap 2x6, 2x8. Beautiful!

こんな未来の銃のような形をした恐ろしい道具は何ともパワフル。先っぽにプラスチックのついた釘と火薬のはいった（？）帯が一緒についてきた。持ってきたときに使い方を聞けたのは私一人だけ。あ、簡単やんと思っていたけど、いざ使おうとしたらやっぱり使い方がわからん。結局携帯のインターネットでしばらく説明書を探す。３０分くらい悩んだあげく、最終的には使えた。。。出来上がりはカーペットではなく木の階段にしたいので今の段階ではその辺にある２x６や２x８の使いさしを使う。お〜すばらしい！

Day 99

Today, I'm the only one who can work. Well, I'm not worry, I kind of like working alone....

今日は私一人作業ができる。いやいや、結構一人で作業するの好きだし、心配してる訳ではないですよ。。。。

I started from south side of the front door. This white metal piece is the starter. All of the walls on porch are small. It's perfect place for me to work alone.

玄関の右側から始める。この白い金属の帯がスターター。ポーチの壁はどれも一人作業のうってつけのサイズ。

Autumn in Japan is tourist season. Autumn here is very pretty, too. I enjoy my first Autumn in Missouri. Our wedding cherry blossom tree got first autumn color, too.

日本の秋は観光シーズンですが、ここの秋も紅葉してきれいです。結婚式に植えた桜の木も初めての紅葉で、わたしもここでの初めての秋を楽しんでます。

Day 98

To change our mind, we worked on Stairs today. We need to do siding, but also we need to work on stairs. So plumber, electrician, and heating man can start working here. We use three 2x12 for one stair. It looks so hard to mark this and cut zigzag. Drake brought us marked wood one for each stairs. So we just cut as it says, and trace it to other 2 boards. It was easy to cut. However just to nail this three hunger took so long. We know it is such a simple work. But in some reason, it always have at least one that doesn't want to go to the right place.

ちょっと気持ちを切り替えるために今日は階段に取りかかってみた。外壁も終わらさないといけないけど，階段も近々必要。階段があれば，水道工事、電気工事、冷暖房の工事を同時進行で進められる。壁をまだいくつか立ち上げないといけないが。エアコンじゃなくてセントラルヒーティングなので冷暖房は石膏ボードを貼る前にしなくてはいけない。階段一つに三枚の２x１２を使う。このジグザグを全部同じ長さ，角度に印を付け切り取るのは大変，と思いきや，ドレイクさんが地下室への階段と２階への階段一枚ずつに計算して線を引いておいてくれた。なのでその一枚を切って，後の２枚はなぞるだけで割と簡単だった。切るのもすんなりだったけど，ハンガーを３つ同じ高さに打ち付けるのにやたらと時間がかかった。何にも難しくないはずなのに、なぜかいっつも最悪一個は打ち付けるときにずれてずれてずれまくるのがある。
Before the time up at least we could nail hungers in place. Of course we tried layout boards in place. Wow it looks like stairs!

時間切れ直前にハンガーが必要な場所につけれた。もちろん試しに板を並べてみる。おー、階段が見える。。。

Day 97

Today is a day for the west gable in front. I take photos everyday from same position. For a while it didn't show any difference even it progressed well. Finally I can capture the progress in there. We worked only the bigger place. I can fill in between windows alone later. So we moved onto side wall of the porch. Everybody worry about this section. This is where water gather together and hit the wall, or snow stays and melt into our house little by little. We need to make sure the water doesn't go into inside. We nailed this big metal sheet with silicone underneath. We used silicone for the nails too. Then also we put silicone over. This should resist water. This is very narrow space. I always think ah~ it's unfair I'm too small, I can't reach anything. But sometimes it's good to be small, I guess. I was be able to crawl into this gap, and work there. When we finished this I had silicone all over and uncomfortable, though.

今日は西の切妻の壁のサイディングを始めた。今まで毎日同じ場所から家の写真を撮ってきたが，ここしばらく変化が全く見えなかった。ようやく，進歩の過程を見せれれる。とりあえず範囲の広い部分だけ進めて，窓と窓の間など一人で作業をできる部分は後回しに。ということでポーチの側壁の作業に移る。誰もが心配するこの壁。屋根が合わさるところで，雨が降ると集まった水が壁にぶち当たる。また，雪がたまってじわじわ家の中に侵入してくる。水が中にはいらないようになんとかしなければ。。。裏側にシリコンをつけたこの大きなアルミのシートを，釘にもシリコンをつけて打ち込み，さらに上から継ぎ目にシリコンを塗る。ここまでしたら大丈夫なはず。ここはかなり狭いスペース。いつも背が低すぎてほとんど何も届かないし，なんと不公平、と思うのだけど。たまには小さくて良いこともあるのか？小さいおかげで一人この隙間を這っていき作業ができた。終わった頃にはシリコンでべたべたで気持ち悪かったけど。
In the afternoon, I worked on the porch more. It's pretty easy compare to other thing we did.

午後になってポーチの作業を進めた。今までやってきたことに比べると楽な作業。

Day 96

We worked on south side wall today. For a while we only have a kitchen door to worry about. It went well. Then to prepare somewhere I can work alone this afternoon, we decided to work on corner pieces on the porch. Well, to put this corner pieces we needed to put 2x6 up at north and south side of the porch roof where under the last ceiling joist. On the south side, we need to make a nallow space between wall and 2x6 In order to attach to the porch beam. We nailed 2x4 as a spacer. So we can slide the last siding there. Since we have a space here, we can attach corner post all the way. This is one of the place that we couldn't visualize for a while. But I think I can do well than we thought. Then we were about to nail one for the north side. And realize there is a small box we need to do something before we nail this 2x6. So we just postpone.

今日はまず南の壁のサイディングつけ。しばらくはキッチンのドアがあるだけなので，割と簡単。その後，午後から私が一人で作業ができるように，ポーチの角の部品をつけてしまうことに。となると，その前にポーチの側壁のすぐ下に来る２x６をつけなくてはいけない。一番南の端のジョイストの真下に２x６をつけるとなると，壁との間に少しだけ隙間を作らなければいけない。スペーサーとして２x４を上に寄せてつけることにした．そうすると，角の部品を上までのばせて，壁と２x６の間にサイディングをつけることができる。ここはしばらくどうしていいかわからず放置していたところの一つだけど，こうなると思ってたよりうまくいきそう。その後，北側の２x６をつけようとしたものの、少しあるメインの屋根の側壁を先になんとかしなければいけないことに気づく。でも，どうしたものかわからないので，とりあえずこっちは放置することにした。
Before lunch we thought about other place that is complicated for us, which is north side of the porch under the floor. It's such a small place, but I wanted to make it right. I fake pretty well using one panel, and half panel, then that will bring next bottom right on the porch. Before the lunch we tried several ways to figure out how to bring the starter as closer as we can to the porch floor. In the afternoon, I went back alone, and thought through.... Eureka! I know what to do. I leave first row of siding face down to the floor. Then nail starter right on there. Then pull the siding up. This bring first bottom right on the floor. But here is the problem, if the piece is too short, it's too hard to bend the side and force in to the corner piece. So this is what I did. I cut first line shorter the width it can lay down. This makes easier to bend to put it into the place. But I can see the very first one is shorter than it supposed to be. I thought nobody notice unless I tell that person. However, Josh realized it..... His eye sight is not wonderful, but he see these things....

お昼ご飯の前にもう一つややこしいところが。ポーチの北側の壁。小さなスペースだけど，なんとかうまく隠したい。いろいろ試したあげく、パネル一枚の上に半パネルでうまくごまかし，次のパネルをポーチの床の真上に来るパネルとつなげることができた。昼食の前にどうすればスターターを床のすぐ上につけれるかいろいろ試してみたもののなかなか。。。午後一人でもう一度考えてみる。ユリイカ！結局最初のパネルをうつむきに床に並べ，その真上にスターターをつける。その後無理矢理パネルを引っ張って持ち上げとめると，この通り、ぴったし真上にとめれた。でもこれを短いスパンのところですると，パネルが短すぎて曲げれない。これでは角の部品の隙間におさめられない。ここでとった策は、一番下に来る板の形の部分だけ前に倒せる長さに切る。折り返しのない板一枚分なら無理矢理曲げることができる。こんな小さな部分だし，言わない限り誰も気づかないはず。と思いきや。。。ジョッシュが早速気づく。眼鏡かけてそんなに視力よくないのに，こういうことはよく見ている。

Day 95

This is our back door from mud room, dining room, and kitchen window.

First thing we did today was to put the scaffolding up. And screwed treated 2x8 under the patio door on south gable second floor. This would be a place to hook floor joists for the porch we are planning to build next summer. For now we just needed that one board, so we can nail siding around. It wasn't so easy to work with this long 2x8 on this height on this scaffolding in this strong sunlight. After we finished this we decided to move to easier north side in the shade.

まず最初に，これは裏口とダイニングとキッチンの窓。

今日最初にしたことは足場を作ること。で，南側の２階の寝室にあるパティオドアの下に化学処理された２x８をぶっといネジで固定すること。ここに来年の夏にバルコニーを作るときに床を支えるジョイストをつけることになる。ま、とりあえず今この板を一枚つけておくとこの周りにサイディングをはれるので後々するよりやりやすい。でも，この直射日光の中高いところで，不安定な足場で，やたらと長いこの板を操るのはそう簡単ではなかった。とりあえず板を付けたところで，日陰で簡単な北側に移ることにした。
One siding is 12 feet. It doesn't reach all the way. So we need to overlap. Now I know this trick. You overlap away from the most viewed side. So this north wall, the siding closer to west the entrance side is overlapping the one on east side. The photo on top is the view from west. Hmm seemless! This photo below is the view from east. You can see the seem.

サイディング一枚は１２フィートなので，壁の幅を覆うのに途中で継ぎ足さなくてはならない。継ぎ足すときに人が流れる方向や，視線を考慮して，視線の元にある方のサイディングが上にかぶさるようにする。これが技だったのね。上の写真は北の壁を入り口のある西側から撮ったところ。継ぎ目が見えない！下の写真は東側から撮った。継ぎ目が写っているはず。
