Day 26

Since we got a nicer level, we checked all walls and make sure it is standing straight up. We fixed north side, part of west side, and some inside walls. Luckily it didn't take longer than we thought it would be. We got 2 doors. Right one is for basement, left one is for bathroom.

昨日買ってきた正しいレベルですべての壁がしっかりと垂直に立っているか確認。思ったより時間もかからず、北壁、西壁の一部、内側の壁を直すだけでよかった。二つドアのつく壁完成。左のはお風呂場へ、右のは地下室へのドア。

Day 25

It supposed to get really hot again today. Small storm pass by, but it was nice and cool morning. We got kitchen! This was not in the blue print, but we decided to make a serving window between kitchen and dining. Door will be a cafe door like the one for western bar in the cowboy movie. We made one step walk in pantry, and little closet for broom and things for cleaning. It went nice and smooth this morning, and oh no! this house monster mess up again.

今日もむちゃくちゃ暑くなる予定。いくつか小さいストームがきたものの、午前中は涼しかった。今日はキッチンがほぼ完成。ブループリントにはないもののキッチンカウンターの上にお皿などを渡せるように窓を作ることに。ドアは西部劇のバーにでてくるスイングドア。片足ウオークイン食品クローゼットとほうきなどの掃除道具をしまっておく小さなクローゼットもほぼできた。なかなかスムーズに午前中をこなしたものの、なんてこつ！またしても家お化けが。
Please don't confuse us anymore. Then, guess what we found out. The level we were trusted wasn't square... We check stud with one side of the level, and say it is plumbed. Then check again with another side of the level, and it says different. Holy moly, it wasn't a monster. We need to check all over again with an accurate tool. For now we check all walls with middle size level. It seems we only need to redo north side. Good we are not completely bad luck. We got a better long level after work, so tomorrow we will start from checking walls...

Anyway, we got temporary electricity today. They came with 5, 6 big trucks to change old posts to new one. We got a old post. We can make a drive way arch sometime.

どうかこれ以上悩ませないで。。。で、何かと言えば。信用していたレベルが四角じゃなかった。レベルの一辺で垂直をだして、ひっくり返して反対側の辺で測ると垂直じゃない。家お化けじゃなかった、とほほ。とりあえず持っていた中くらいの大きさののレベルでもう一度全部の壁を確かめ直し、北側の壁は直さないといけない模様。最悪北のみなのでまだましか。作業を終えて、町までしっかりした大きなレベルを買いに行ったので、明日は朝から確かめ直し。

さておき、今日５、６台の大型トラックがきて電柱の立て替えをしていた。古い木造電柱をもらえるように頼んだので、ドライブウェイの入り口にウェルカムアーチを作る予定。仮電力が届きました。

Day 24

Since it is cooler in the morning, we decided to finish this sultry basement work today. We put 2x10 bridge between I joists under the walls that run east to west. This will help from sinking floor after long time. Also we made a part of the wall that goes on the beam. When we checking square, plumb, the house monster start confuse us again... Check check check check, hummer one nail, and check again. Looks nice and plumed. Hammered second nail. When we check again, it is a bit off. Hmmm, so frustrated. Well, since we don't know the lough opening for interior door. There are not much to do today. Well, since we are angry, let's call it a day. Hopefully this house monster, and we all would calm down by tomorrow morning.

午前中はいつも涼しいのでこの蒸し暑い地下室作業は今日の朝用に残しておいた。東西に走る壁の下のIジョイストの間に短い２x１０を渡して、時が経っても床が沈まないように補強する。その後ビームの上を通る壁の一部を作る。水平垂直を確かめだしたらまたしても家お化けのいたずらか。確かめて確かめて確かめて確かめてくぎを一本打つ。もう一度確認。大丈夫、まだ垂直。二本目の釘を打ち付けて確認し直し、ずれている。いー腹立つ。どうせラフオープニングのサイズがわからないし、今日はそんなにできることがないし、三人そろってご立腹やし、今日はおしまい！家お化けも私たちもみんな明日になったら落ち着きますように。

Day 23

Since we finished all exterior walls up yesterday, we started from squaring them. Tied them together with top plates. I knew it will take time, indeed it did take time. Especially this last wall which is west side library wall. Every time we check square, plumb, level says different. Even if we did braces, it seems that doesn't work. It's a last wall. We hope all gaps fit together and become nice and square, but it seems does not fit perfectly. We struggled for a while , and all the sudden everything fit perfect in some reason! We don't understand... Maybe we started to have a life in our house. It is not just sticks anymore.

昨日外側の壁を全部立て終えたので、今日は水平、垂直を直して全部の壁をもう一枚板をのせて固定する。すぐにはできないとわかってたが、実際時間がかかる。特にこの西の図書室の壁。測り直すたびに違うことを言ってくる。補強の板を入れた後でも動いた後が。。。最後の壁なので、すべての隙間をぴったりと合わせれば全部ぴったりくるはずと願うものの、補強も役に立っていないのか。何度も止めたり外したりしばらく手こずってたものの、突然！全部完璧に合ってしまった。水平垂直も完璧。わけわからん。もしかしてそれが家に何かが宿った瞬間やったか。もうただの板の固まりではなくなったよう。

This is how we made walls square. We tried this simple tool we found from a book. This works pretty well. Also we fix the basement beam stronger. Now we can invite you all, and have a big party.

この何とも単純な本で見つけた道具。作って試してみると思いのほかうまくいく。全部の壁が固定できたので、さらに重みを加算する前に地下室に戻って、ビームの補強をする。これでみんなを呼んでパーティーができますよ。

Day 22

We started from west wall south side. We have library with big window, and small window there. I will make a nice comfy sitting area next to this small window. Hmmm... it would be nice with lots of pillows and nurtural light.

今日は西窓の南半分から始める。一階南西は本とレコードのリビングルーム／図書室になる。真ん中に大きな窓と、角に小さな窓。小さな窓の横にクッションのいっぱいあるすわれる、横になれる自然光のよく入る一角を作る予定。
And we did entrance with 2x6. Both side walls are connect to interior wall. So we made with 2x4. We was going to use decoration sticks for the wall that divide entrance and library. However, we changed our plan to do stained glass there. In day time it will make a nice shadow from library light. At night it will glow by entrance light. That will be Momoko's corner. Once walls are up, we can see and feel our rooms. It is nice we can still changes the detail that fits to our movement. Guest room is almost like a room too. This will be your room when you come to visit us.

その後、玄関の壁を２x６で、その横に来る壁は室内の壁とつながっているため２x４で作る。玄関と図書室を分ける壁には光が入るように格子で分けるつもりだったが、ステンドグラスを後々はめるこトに急遽変更。昼間は図書室の窓からに影が玄関にできて、夜はステンドグラス越しに玄関の明かりが見えてよい感じになりそう。ここを桃子の一角にする予定。壁が立ち上がると部屋割りが見えてきて、いろんなことがシュミレーションしやすくなる。自分たちで作っているので、好きに変えて行けて満足できる家になりそう。ゲストルームも部屋らしくなった。遊びにきたときにはここに泊まってください。

Day 21

Not like yesterday, we had very constructive morning. We learned from yesterday. We finished north wall without any mistake in just few hours! Impressive.

The first thing we found in the morning was this OK on the ground that we have no idea. Maybe this was a good sign.

昨日と一変、なんと建設的な一日。北の壁を一度も間違えずに数時間で完成。感心！朝一番で発見したこのOKサインがよい兆しだった。何のサインか、いつの間に旗がたてられたかはわからないけど。

Our north wall have my bathroom window. We finished this wall, and moved to north side of our west wall.

北壁には私が作る予定のお風呂の窓がある。今日は西の壁の北側半分まで進んだ。
We got bath tabs, too. We need to get tabs before we put up all walls because they are too big to carry in from door.

壁ができてからでは家の中に入れられないので、はやめに注文していたバスタブも届いた。

Day 20 : It was not our day

It was hot hot day with no breeze. Bob couldn't sleep at all last night. Josh was over heated. Momoko got a mosquito bite on her eye over night. It swollen and hard to see. We all three were cranky carpenters. We put up a wall, find mistake, and take it down. We made marks, find mistake, and need to switch lumbers. We put up a wall, found something is not right, need to make stair way narrower. Our brain doesn't work, hard to understand each other, and this wall never ends.... Well, compare to us... They accomplished. While we were wasting time, plumber guys worked hard. They filled most of pit, dig a trench, and put sewage pipe. We were planning to fill the pit after the all framing work, since it might move the basement walls. But after some rainy days, our pit was getting bigger and bigger. Now its much easier, and safer to move around.

全く風もない暑い日。ボブはなぜかしら昨日一睡もできず。ジョッシュは暑さにぐだぐだ。桃子は夜のうちに片目を蚊にかまれ、はれているので視界の悪い醜い顔に。三人そろっていらついたぐだぐだのカーペンターズ。壁を立ち上げては間違いに気付き、やり直し。測って印を全部に付けたものの間違いに気付き、木材を切るところまで戻る。壁を立ち上げたもののなんかおかしい。。。階段が広すぎた。と、脳みそは働かず、言うことも通じなくなり、この壁はいつまでたっても出来上がらない。そんな私たちと比べ、下水工事にきてくれた人たちはてきぱきとこなす。地下室の周りをほぼ埋め直し、下水用の溝を掘り、パイプを通してもらった。壁が歪む恐れがあるので、フレームが終わるまで埋めないつもりだったけど、雨のたびに土砂崩れで溝がどんどん広がっていたので埋めてもらうことに決定。これで穴に落ちる心配がなくなって作業がしやすくなる。
This tractor they brought have multiple digging tools, and extra legs. The chair inside can turn around. Looked like fun. So finally our drain would work. No flooding in our basement anymore.

この重機はいろんな掘るための先と、予備の足がついていて、いすをくるくる回して前に進んだり、後ろを使ったりする。見た目に楽しい。これで地下室に水はたまらないはず。
