Time capsule

For the anniversary of our second year, we hide a time capsule. I always like the idea that leaving message for future. Actually this is my third time capsule since when I was kid. Other two were already under the light, I couldn't even wait for 5 years. Other two the little me hid in the past were that most of people may consider as garbages. But this time, I'm serious. We put several family photos that could truck us. And letters for each other, and for kids we haven't seen. If someday one of our descendant want to sell this place, and find this time capsule, then he or she would decided to keep our important place for the families.
結婚２周年にタイムカプセルを埋めた。未来に向けてメッセージを残しておくというコンセプトが好きでこれで人生３つ目のタイムカプセル。ほかの二つは５年と待てずにもうすでに白日の下にさらされている。といっても、小さい頃の私が埋めたものと言えば今の私も含めて多くの人がゴミと呼ぶものだった。でも今回はまじめに。将来私たちが塵になっても元をたどれるようにいくつかの家族写真とお互いに向けた手紙、あとはまだあったこともない子供への手紙を入れた。もしもいつの日か私たちの子孫がこの土地を売ろうと考えたとき、やっぱり家族のためにとっとこっか、と気持ちを変えさせれるように。

二本目の結婚記念桜も植えた。

Family visited from Japan!

My family was visited us from Japan! My grandma always says I want to visit you before I die, and she made it! And she is still healthy. 

私の家族が日本から遊びにきてくれました。おばあちゃんはいつも「死ぬ前に一度どんなとこか見に行きたいわ」と言っていて、ついにきてくれました！そんなことをいつもいいながら英語の本まで持ってきて、まだまだ元気でしたが。

You might think there is nothing to visit around here. But we have nice places to visit. This is one of the place I always wanted to go. And since they are here, finally I got to go too. Another small town (well not like Barnard, though) called Jamesport. There is an amish community in this town. Also lots of small antique stores. It is interesting that people still use horse wagon to go everywhere. We saw even little boys had their own little pony and little wagon. You shouldn't take photo of them, so you need you visit in person. It's one of the valuable things that you are traveling in real.
みんなこの辺にはなんにもないと思っていることでしょうが、意外といろいろとあるのです。そのうちの一つ、実は私がずっと行きたかったジェームスポートというアーミッシュのコミュニティがある町。家族がきたついでについに訪ねることができました。小さなアンティークの店もたくさんあって面白い。みんな今でも違和感なくどこに行くにも馬車で移動している姿はなかなか興味深い。ちいちゃい男の子達ですら、ちいちゃいポニーに引かれたちいちゃい馬車に乗っていた。写真は撮ることができないので実際に訪ねるしかない。ま、それが旅の醍醐味でしょう。

 This is an amish glossary store. They had lots of pre-mixed food bags, dried fruits, vegetable chips. It almost looks like ceramics store that sell glaze materials.
いくつかあるアーミッシュのお店のうちの一つ、スーパーマーケット。既に調合されたスープミックスや、ケーキミックス、様々な野菜チップス、ナッツやジャムがそろっている。釉薬の原料を売る陶芸の店みたい。

 We had too many things to see..... in this short stay. So we took easy and had picnic with nuts and chips we got from amish place. Hmm yammy. They brought bunch of shrine and temple related things and lucky charms for my life, family, business, age, etc. Thank you! We hope you enjoyed here.
この短い滞在であっち行って、こっち行ってしたもので、ちょっと疲れて今日は少しピクニックでもしてゆっくりしよう。たくさんお守りなど持ってきてくれました。どうもありがとう。

Stair ways

 These days I 'm stain and burnishing bunch of things. Tried to finish stair way railed before my family come to visit us. Well, at least  for the steps. We couldn't get a long enough rail for the steps, so we attached two rails in the middle with screw in inside. We used thick metal plate to attach bigger main poles. Then screw the rail to them with big screws. Balusters are much lighter attached. We drilled holes on steps. Then glued the knob on the bottom of balusters and toe nailed the top to the groove under the rail. Then nailed thin flat small pieces underneath in between balusters to hide the edge.
ここ最近ステインに次ぐステイン、ニス塗りに次ぐニス塗り。もうすぐ私の家族が日本から来るので、それまでにせめて階段部分の手すりだけは設置したい。階段部分、上からしたまで届く手摺が手に入らないため、自分たちで両側がスクリューになっているねじを真ん中に入れ、接着剤でしっかりと継ぐ。メインになる大きい柱は下を分厚い鉄板で床としっかりと固定させる。その後手摺を大きなボルトで柱と固定。手摺子はそれと比べると簡単に設置。階段にドリルでそれぞれ穴をあけ、手摺子の下の取っ手部分を差し込み糊で固定、斜めに切った上の部分は手摺の下の溝に差し込み、斜めにくぎを打ち固定。タタラ板のような薄き板を小さく切って、それぞれの手摺子の間にはめ、裏の汚い部分を隠す。

I sounds easy, but In some reason it took forever like as always. First of all, we installed the big poles and rail in the height that we measure from the height of balusters. By the time we installed baluster we realized it was too high. What happen!? And it supposed to be a same angle all the way, but it was steep than steps.... We couldn't figure out why with out brain, so we just remeasure, recut according to the balusters on the bottom, middle, and top steps. Eventually we got this nice looking stair rail! Now my grandma can go up and down this steps.
簡単に聞こえるが、なぜかしらやたらと時間がかかった。まず最初に大きな柱と手摺を手摺子を基準にした高さで設置したはずなのに、高すぎて手摺子が届かない結果に。しかも私と数学の先生のボブのセオリーによると手摺が階段と同じ角度であがっているはずなのに、したと上で高さが違う。。。なんで！？しばらく理屈に乗っ取って考えた結果、理解不能なので、もう一度下、真ん中、上の手摺子を基準にして上の柱を切り直す。最終的にはこんなにすてきな手摺ができたのでよしとしよう。体重をかけるのは怖いが、かけても大丈夫なくらいしっかりしている。ま、私は一生もたれないことにしよう。これで今度おばあちゃんがきても二階まで見せれる。

We couldn't start this hallway rail by the time my family came. But finally we got this rail that reach without attaching in middle. The side that connect to the bedroom wall, we used big post, but half thickness of the ones we used to steps. Since we are going to attach balusters on laminate floor, we made little bit bigger hole on laminate floor for each balusters. And glue only on OSB floor. So the laminate floor can move like it supposed to be.
階段部分の手摺は間に合ったものの、廊下部分の手摺がきたのは最近。私の家族の帰った後だった。寝室の壁側の柱は同じ形の柱で半分の厚みのもの。手摺子はラミネートの床の上に設置することになるので、ラミネートの床の部分だけ少し大きめの穴をあける。で、その下の合板の床の部分にだけ糊で固定することになる。これでラミネートの床は湿気や温度に伴いうまく動いてくれるはず。

After the storm...

 Couple of weeks ago, we had a big storm. This is what happened!! After we came back from movie, we found out our scale siding is flapping around! The wind was strong all night, and continued next day, too. We were worried all of them were going to fly away, but only one came out from wall. So, we spent few nice days to work outside to fix it. It looked awful, but we found out it's not taking long at all to fix. Good. This time we were be able to hook tighter. Hopefully it won't happen again... Knock a wood, please!
数週間前、アメリカ中部に発達した大きな嵐が来た。その結果！！いつもと違った荒れ狂った天気に何となくわくわくしながら行った映画の帰りに、鱗のサイディングがばたばたとはずれてるのを発見。えー！強い風はその晩、また次の日へと続き、このまま全部吹き飛んでしまわないかと音におびえながら風のやんだ暖かい日を待った。結局飛んでしまったのは一枚だけで、それも見つかった。天気のいい日何日かで、つけ直すことに。見た目は悲しい感じだったけど、作業を始めてみるとぱっぱとテンポよく進んだ。今回は前回よりもしっかりと深くフックに引っ掛けることができたはず。暑くなるとサイディングが膨張するため、無駄な釘は打つべからずだが、端っこにくるパネルには下の方にも小さなくぎを打った。これでまた外れないように祈るだけ。

 When we took the siding from wall, I was surprised there are so many eggs in behind..... These will be future what? We'll see.
Recently we have stormy days. But sometimes it brings beautiful rainbow later. And I like it!
壁からサイディングを外したとき、裏側にいーっぱいの卵を産みつけられているのを発見。産まれたらいったい何になるのか。。。
最近は荒れた天気が続く。でも時にはこんな完璧な虹がかかることも。こんな天気も結構好き。

Finally we got a kitchen sink!

The last delivery of the counter top, we found out the biggest part of the counter top was damaged. We waited almost a month for them to make a new one. Since it was the corner piece, and very long. It separated for 3 pieces. First we tried to lay on the cabinet to see if it fits. Actually it didn't fit. I guess the template we sent back to them didn't really work. We needed to cut the smallest piece by ourselves. Well, it's ok. We could cut to the part it touch to the wall. So we can hide non-straight cut by calk. Then the smaller corner piece fits, but it's very tight in between wall and stove. We were planning to move the stove, refrigerator, and small counter between stove and fridge.

前回カウンタートップを配達してもらったとき、一番大きなパーツが壊れていたため、新しく作り直してもらっていた。待つことほぼ一ヶ月、ついにうちへと届いた。今回取り付けるカウンタートップは角にくる部分で、キッチンの壁一面続く長いものなので、３つに別れている。まずはとりあえずキャビネットの上に置いてみてきちんとはまるかチェックする。はまらない。。。こういうことがないようにと、ずいぶんと前にもらったテンプレートを直して送り直していたのに、そのシステムは機能していないよう。まあ仕方がない。自分たちで切るか。壁に接する側を切るので、少しくらいのぐねぐねはコルクで隠せる。反対側の短い角にくるパーツははまるもののものすごくきつい。ま、このくらいならぎりぎりコンロ、小さなカウンター、冷蔵庫を動かしてはめることが出来るはず。

Now we have to attach this three pieces together with cramp and glue they sent us together. Screw the cramps in the back side, and after glowed and cramp together, we still be able to adjust the height of both boards.

さて、この３つのパーツをダイニングの床で一緒に送られてきたクランプと糊で引っ付ける作業。まずはこのクランプを裏側にねじで固定し、糊を塗った後しっかりと締める。それから板の上下を調節してまっすぐ平につなぐ。

After it became one big piece, it was pretty heavy. We wait for Josh to come back, and moved the stove, and finally stetted on the cabinets. Oh no! I guess our wall wasn't exactly straight. The edge is sticking out to the area the stone comes quarter inch more than we expected. We can't move refrigerator that much in order to open the door. Hmmm, this edge was finished edge, but what can we do. We just need to cut here as straight as possible. Fortunately you can't really see here because the stove is really tight touching.

すべてつなげ終え、一枚の大きな板になったものの、重い。ジョッシュが帰ってくるのを待ち、コンロを動かし、一悶着でカウンターをのせてみる。エー壁がまっすぐじゃなかったか、コンロ側の端が１／４インチほど思ったより突き出している。ここまで冷蔵庫を動かすとドアが開かなくなる。こっちの端は処理のしてある端だけども自分たちで、なるべくまっすぐ切るより仕方がない。まあ、こっち側はコンロとぎゅーぎゅーに引っ付いているのでほぼ見えないしいいか。

They pre-cutted sink hall. So after we set this nice counter top, we just needed to hammer it out. Ah, it is so nice to have a sink in the kitchen. We don't need to go bathroom to wash dishes, clean vegetables, and drain hot water. Now our life is so much easier than before....

シンクのくる穴は工場でほぼ切ってあった。後は薄くなっている部分を金槌で打ち落とすだけ。アー台所の流しってすてき。もうこれでお風呂場でのお皿洗いや、毎回毎回野菜を洗いにいったり、うどんをゆでたお湯を捨てに走ったりしなくてもよいなんて。

First floor bathroom

This first floor bathroom also uses same vinyl tiles. First I needed to screw plywood down. Since this bathroom already have sink, and we still need to use it until I make one with clay, I needed to slide the floor under neath.

一階のお風呂場も同じ白黒のビニールタイルを使う。まずは合板を張るところから。一階のお風呂場は私が陶器でシンクを作るまでこの簡易のシンクを使う。まだ台所のシンクも入っていないのでこれを取り外す訳にいかないということで床はシンクの下にスライドしていれた。

This time I decided to do traditional scale pattern. It might makes us dizzy for a while. But I know we get used to it.... I will wait to take the toilet out to do the floor until the second floor toilet will be installed. The little closet floor have a secret ninja face. It will covered by things, though.

今回は伝統的な鱗柄にすることにした。しばらくはトイレに行く度に目が回るかもしれないが、しばらくしたら慣れるはず。。。２階のトイレが設置されるまで、このトイレを外すのは待つことにした。クローゼットの床には忍者の顔のつもりだけど、そうは見えないか。結局いろんなもので隠れてしまうけど。。。

Up stairs bath room

We got vinyl tile for bath rooms. I wanted to have marble tile, but of course it was way out of budget. Also it would be lots of works. So we decided to use vinyl black and white tile. It was good choice. I can cut with scissors and utility knife. It already have adhesive in the back. So just peel the paper off and stick it. Just in case since I cut some parts small I use the glue, though. Before I started this vinyl tile, I had to put another plywood floor. The floor we had was OSB board. OSB is made with compressed wood chips. So the surface is too rough to use for vinyl.

本当は大理石タイルを使いたかったけど、もちろん大幅予算外なので、ビニール製の白黒タイルを使うことにした。まあ、切ったり、固定したりするのに手間のかかる大理石に比べたら、かなりのらくちん作業なのでいい選択です。切るのははさみやカッターで出来るし、裏には既に粘着材がついているので紙をはがしてはるだけ。小さく切るパーツもあるので一応専用の糊もつけましたが。タイルを始める前に、全体に表面の平らな合板の板を張る作業から始めた。今までの床はOSBと呼ばれ、木っ端を糊で固めたもの。強いのは強いが、表面が荒いのでタイルには向かない。
Septic tube haven't connect to anything yet. Especially when it is humid the stinky smell comes out from this tube. So I put towels there to stop it. However, in some reason cats like that smell. Right after I clog this hole, one of our cat come in and pull the towel, lay next to the hole with smile. I tried to clog them like 30 times today, but I gave up. Seems it is his heaven room now.

まだトイレや浴槽につながる下水管があいたままなので、特に雨の後などは何とも言えないにおいがするのでタオルを突っ込んでふたをしている。ところがなぜかしら、うちの猫はこのにおいが好きなようで、タオルを突っ込むたびに部屋に戻ってきてはタオルを抜き取り、うれしそうに横に寝転びガードする。今日は３０回くらいこのやり取りをしたものの、あまりにうれしそうなのでこっちが引いてあげよう。
