Day 123

Putting more and more insulation. We did guest room today. It just a paper, but feels like inside wall. This process goes very quick. We feel accomplished.

今日も断熱材の作業を続ける。今日はゲストルーム。紙で覆われているだけだけど、壁が貼られたような気に少しなる。作業がはかどるので達成感があって良い。
The first floor bath tub, finally it's out of disintegrated box. We got blue and red pipes for hot and cold water here. And it leads you to the basement.

ついに崩れた段ボールから出された一階のバスタブ。青と赤のパイプが通って、お湯と水の道ができた。これをたどると地下室につながる。
We have spaghetti in our basement.　地下室に麺が垂れ下がる。

Day 122

This insulation is for 8' walls. It's pre-cut kraft faced insulation. This goes very quick since we don't need to cut each one. If I have a step ladder, I can do this little by little in the afternoon. However, this gives me uncomfortable itch even after I take shower. I kept putting more pink stuff in the afternoon. We put this higher above the collar ties. So it doesn't clogged by blowing insulation in the attic later.

この断熱材は８フィートの壁用に既に切ってあるクラフトペーパーのついたものなので、いちいち自分たちで切らなくても良い。この作業は思いのほかはかどる。踏み台があれば午後に少しずつでも作業を進めれる。ただこのシャワーを浴びた後にでも残る不快なかゆみが何とも不愉快。午後になって、さらにピンクのやつを張っていく。カラータイよりもだいぶ高めまで張っておくのは、この紙のついた断熱材の上に別の断熱材を屋根裏に吹き付ける予定なので、それで詰まってしまわないように。

Day 121

This pink styrofoam are channels for air to move up to attic. This will help house to keep cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and it prevents ice to build up on the roof. We decided to instal this on every between rafters. The house shouldn't have a space that air to trap. If the air don't move well, it reduces insulation efficiency. Sometimes you see water stain on the ceiling in old houses where it shouldn't have water leak. I used to think it is some kind of ghost's remain. But now I think it is because of condensation. Insulation got moisture, and it doesn't vent well any more.

On east side, we have space between rafters at over hung. So when we attach soffit, we used vented soffit which have many holes for every 4th one, to let air to come in. West side on the porch is all open. However, on south west side we have a tiny room that doesn't have anywhere air to come in. Also, the area that change porch roof to gable roof. We need to think about it....

このピンクの発泡スチロールは垂木の間に設置するもので、軒下から入ってくる空気を屋根裏まで通すためのもの。風がよく通ることで、夏は涼しく、冬は暖かく保つことができる。また、家の中が暖かくても断熱材で温度調節され、雪を溶かして屋根の上で固まるのをさけることができる。これを全ての垂木の間につけることにした。もし空気がうまく流れなかったら、だんだんと水蒸気がたまって、断熱材の効果が薄れてくる。古い家の天井に水道管なんてないはずなのにシミがあるのは、お化けのせいなんかではなく、断熱材が古くなって空気が動かず、温度差でできた結露の仕業だったのね。東側の軒下は４つに一つは換気用の穴のたくさんあいた下板をつけたので十分に空気が入ってくる。西側クローゼットの裏は、ポーチの屋根とつながっているのでたくさん空気が通る。ただ、クローゼットの裏でもポーチの屋根とつながらないところ、また、南西の角の小さなスペースは空気の入る穴がない。う〜んどうしたものか。

This afternoon, I made this shelf space for the movie room. Since it is a movie room, we want to have a build in shelf for Blue-ray player, receiver, etc. Also we want to have a plug here inside of this shelf. The top of the shelf would be angled because of the roof. Hmmm, I'm getting a better carpenter.

午後になってムービールームの作り付けの棚の枠を作る。レシーバーやブルーレイプレイヤーなどいろいろな電気機材がここにくるが、コードは後ろに隠したいのでこの壁にコンセントをつけてもらう。一番上は屋根にあたるので斜めにすることにした。腕が上がったよう。

John works very fast. Now we have many cords between studs. We can't walk through the wall anymore.

ジョンは仕事が速い。今は壁の間にコードがたくさん走って、もう壁の通り抜けができない。

Day 120

This facia board for the porch is the last thing we need to do except scale siding which haven't arrived yet. Wow well done!

ポーチの屋根の先につく鼻隠しの板が、まだ届いていない残りの鱗サイディングを残して最後の作業となる。完成！
We had front door out side door handle for a while. And inside knob for the front door delivered yesterday. Well, the reason we didn't really start this front door because the holes for the handle looks too low for us. When we put the handle to the place, it actually feels low, too. However, if you look from inside, it probably would be the right place...? After several day of inside discussion, and discussion with Drake, we got tired of thinking, and got lazy about thinking what if we need to change this door..... Ah...... So we decided to think this is the right height. When we start screw the first pice in place, head of the screw came off. Two of them... Frustrated! Now what can we do... So we gave up to put handle here today, and just put the dead bolt. Then realized the hole for the dead bolt on the trim doesn't fit!

実は玄関の外側のノブはだいぶ前に届いていた。で、その内側につくドアノブも昨日届いた。外側が届いたときにドアにあいている穴に合わしてみて、なんだかやたらと低く、小人の住む家の玄関のように見える。実際触ってみて低く感じるので何となく作業を進めなかった。ここしばらく、みんなで相談したり、ドレイクにどうしたものかと聞いたりしていたものの、返事をもらう前になんだか考えるのがめんどくさくなり、もしドアをかえなければいけないとなると大事やん、、、ということでもうこの高さでいいということになった。何となくドレイクの思うつぼのような気がしないでもないが。まあ、外から見ると小人の家の風合いがあるが、中から見るとドアノブは正しい位置にあるしな〜と言い聞かせる。ということで作業を始めたものの、最初の部品をつけたときにネジが壊れた。いー！腹立つー！ネジの上からネジとめられないし、どないしよ。と苛立ちを残したまま、今日はハンドルをつけるのはやめ。上の穴につける鍵の部分だけつけることに。とここで外枠の穴に部品が合わないことに気づく。なんてこつ！
So this afternoon, my job is to chisel this trim to make it fits to the parts. Then drill holes right on the broken screw. We were so upset in the morning, but after all, it wasn't so bad.

私の今日の午後の作業はまずドアの外枠の穴と彫り、部品の形に合わせる。そして、ドアに詰まった折れたネジを少しずつドリルで穴を開け、金属を削りだしていく。午前中はあんなに腹立たしいー、どうすんねんと思ったけど、割と簡単に直せた。

Day 119

Finally we got F-channel we waited for a while, too. We can finish porch ceiling! It looks beautiful! We also got lots of insolation. This gives me a feeling of finishing up!
By the way, good news. My green card arrived! This is my first one, so this will expired in two years, though. Still have a uncomfortable feeling that they are testing our marriage, but that's ok.

ついに待ちに待っていたFチャンネルが届いた。これでポーチの屋根を完成できる。すてき！それとともに断熱材が山盛り届いた。これで内壁の作業に向けての閉めの作業が始まるという予感！

ところで、先日インタビューをしにいった結果のグリーンカード（永住権）が届きました！これは最初のグリーンカードなので２年で切れるが、とりあえずホッ。まだこの結婚が疑いの目で見られて試されてるという、もやもやがあるものの、まいっか。

Day 118

These days I was putting blocking between collar ties and rafters to attach walls with top plate. And today is the day we actually nailed the walls! It's all nice and steady.

ここ最近、午後は壁のくる上の垂木やカラータイの間に短い板を付けていっていた。で、今日はついに壁とその板の間にもう一枚板を敷いて、壁をお互いに固定し、天井とも固定した。これで押しても引いてももたれても大丈夫。
Then we went outside to finish east side. We had facia board wide enough for the gable part. This horizontal facia part is wider than angle. Finally we got facia board this wide. This was very easy job compare to the gable area.

その後外での作業に切り替え、残っていた東の鼻隠しの板の作業をした。今までの作業で使っていた板は切妻部分は十分覆えたが、水平部分を覆うには短すぎた。先日太めの板を届けてもらったので、ついに東側の作業を完成できる。切妻部分の作業と比べると何ともラクチン。
Then we worked on door knobs! This wasn't difficult either. We haven't got any dead bolt yet. Still we can lock the door by the key on the knob. I don't know it is because I am from city or not, but I feel comfortable the door to be able to lock. Even if we don't have anything here, yet... My parent's house in Japan have 3 locks in the front 2 in the back.

In the afternoon, I started putting plugs. This didn't take long at all. Our electrician John have very good system. This board cut at the hight where the plug needs to be. So I just lay the board on stud, and nail the box there. This long one is for the kitchen. This height will be above the counter. Other one is shorter, 13" from the floor. The tool he has is fascinating. He also have handmade stool with wheel on the bottom which is perfect height for the 13" plug. So he can move around without stand up. Smart! Reminds me of Tati movie.

次はドアノブの取り付け。これも想像していたよりもずっと簡単。まだその上にくる鍵は届いてないものの、これでノブについた鍵でドアを閉めれる。ここと比べると街で育ったからかどうかはわからないけれど、ドアに鍵をかけれるというだけで、取られるものは何もなくても安心する。この辺りの人は家の鍵はかけずに開けっ放し、車の鍵は映画のようにサンバイザーの上に隠している。というか隠してもいなくて、さしたままにしている。それと比べ日本の親の家では玄関に３つ、裏口に２つ鍵がついている。

午後になって、コンセントの箱をつけていく作業をした。電気屋さんのジョンの方法でするとあっという間に終わった。キッチン用のこの板を壁につけて、その上に箱を置いて釘を打つとカウンターの上にくる高さになるという仕掛け。板はもう一枚あり、それは床から１３インチと規定に沿った高さになる。ここは小さい田舎のさらに郊外なので、規定に沿う必要はないものの、この高さには何かしら理由があるはず。もうひとつ、賢い！と思う道具が一つ。牛の乳搾りのいすのような、電気屋さんのいす。この１３インチにぴったしの高さで車輪がついている。一度も立ち上がることなく部屋から部屋へと動き回り仕事をこなしていく。タチの映画に出てきそう。

Day 117

Finally we got one more box of half round siding we ordered couple of weeks ago. Let's see how far we can cover. Last time when we did this scale siding felt pretty easy and very fast. However, this time it took forever. There are so many hook you need to attach together. Unfortunately we found some pieces that doesn't hook well from last time. Which means we needed to take some pieces off from walls... Then we nailed some up and found another piece that wasn't attached well. So redo it. Ah today was the day that walk 3 steps, go back 2 steps like we have in Japanese song.... which is life. Anyway, two pieces left from new box, and still not enough... We ordered another box.

ついに鱗サイディングの箱が届く。さてどこまでいけるか早速付け出す。前回この作業をしたときは，思いのほかはかどり，みるみる間に壁を覆っていった感があるが、今回はなぜかしら思うようにいかない。今までの長い板のサイディングと違い，たくさんのフックをそれぞれきちんとつけなくてはいけない。悔しいことに前回つけた中にいくつかきちんとかませていなかったものを発見する。ということで，前回つけたものをいくつか巻き戻してやり直すことに。その後いくつかつけた後，またしてもきちんとかんでいないものを発見し，いくつかはがしてやり直し。今日は，なんでかつけては発見、はがしてやり直しの繰り返しで全然進まん。三歩歩いて二歩下がり、六歩歩いて四歩戻り，十歩分移動してるはずやのに二歩しか進んでない。あ〜歯がゆい，これが人生か。ともかく，後二枚を残して二箱目が終わる。また新しく注文して，しばらく待たなければ。

When I went back in the afternoon, I found something wrong. I found a ladder on north side, then temporally plug didn't work. And found there is no meter on temporally electricity post. Oh no somebody took it! Then found something different on our big electricity post. Wow, here is the meter on the box on the north side wall. Yes, we got permanent electricity!! It was so much faster than I thought.

午後に戻ったとき，何かがおかしいことに気付く。ここ最近誰も使ってなかったはしごが北側に立っている。？仮電力が使えない。で，仮電力の柱からからメーターが消えていることに気付く。え〜盗まれた！？とここで目に入った電柱の様子が違う。あっ北の壁についていた箱にメーターがついてる。そうです！ついに電気が通りました！思ってたよりもずっとずっと早かった。
