Day 97

Today is a day for the west gable in front. I take photos everyday from same position. For a while it didn't show any difference even it progressed well. Finally I can capture the progress in there. We worked only the bigger place. I can fill in between windows alone later. So we moved onto side wall of the porch. Everybody worry about this section. This is where water gather together and hit the wall, or snow stays and melt into our house little by little. We need to make sure the water doesn't go into inside. We nailed this big metal sheet with silicone underneath. We used silicone for the nails too. Then also we put silicone over. This should resist water. This is very narrow space. I always think ah~ it's unfair I'm too small, I can't reach anything. But sometimes it's good to be small, I guess. I was be able to crawl into this gap, and work there. When we finished this I had silicone all over and uncomfortable, though.

今日は西の切妻の壁のサイディングを始めた。今まで毎日同じ場所から家の写真を撮ってきたが，ここしばらく変化が全く見えなかった。ようやく，進歩の過程を見せれれる。とりあえず範囲の広い部分だけ進めて，窓と窓の間など一人で作業をできる部分は後回しに。ということでポーチの側壁の作業に移る。誰もが心配するこの壁。屋根が合わさるところで，雨が降ると集まった水が壁にぶち当たる。また，雪がたまってじわじわ家の中に侵入してくる。水が中にはいらないようになんとかしなければ。。。裏側にシリコンをつけたこの大きなアルミのシートを，釘にもシリコンをつけて打ち込み，さらに上から継ぎ目にシリコンを塗る。ここまでしたら大丈夫なはず。ここはかなり狭いスペース。いつも背が低すぎてほとんど何も届かないし，なんと不公平、と思うのだけど。たまには小さくて良いこともあるのか？小さいおかげで一人この隙間を這っていき作業ができた。終わった頃にはシリコンでべたべたで気持ち悪かったけど。
In the afternoon, I worked on the porch more. It's pretty easy compare to other thing we did.

午後になってポーチの作業を進めた。今までやってきたことに比べると楽な作業。

Day 96

We worked on south side wall today. For a while we only have a kitchen door to worry about. It went well. Then to prepare somewhere I can work alone this afternoon, we decided to work on corner pieces on the porch. Well, to put this corner pieces we needed to put 2x6 up at north and south side of the porch roof where under the last ceiling joist. On the south side, we need to make a nallow space between wall and 2x6 In order to attach to the porch beam. We nailed 2x4 as a spacer. So we can slide the last siding there. Since we have a space here, we can attach corner post all the way. This is one of the place that we couldn't visualize for a while. But I think I can do well than we thought. Then we were about to nail one for the north side. And realize there is a small box we need to do something before we nail this 2x6. So we just postpone.

今日はまず南の壁のサイディングつけ。しばらくはキッチンのドアがあるだけなので，割と簡単。その後，午後から私が一人で作業ができるように，ポーチの角の部品をつけてしまうことに。となると，その前にポーチの側壁のすぐ下に来る２x６をつけなくてはいけない。一番南の端のジョイストの真下に２x６をつけるとなると，壁との間に少しだけ隙間を作らなければいけない。スペーサーとして２x４を上に寄せてつけることにした．そうすると，角の部品を上までのばせて，壁と２x６の間にサイディングをつけることができる。ここはしばらくどうしていいかわからず放置していたところの一つだけど，こうなると思ってたよりうまくいきそう。その後，北側の２x６をつけようとしたものの、少しあるメインの屋根の側壁を先になんとかしなければいけないことに気づく。でも，どうしたものかわからないので，とりあえずこっちは放置することにした。
Before lunch we thought about other place that is complicated for us, which is north side of the porch under the floor. It's such a small place, but I wanted to make it right. I fake pretty well using one panel, and half panel, then that will bring next bottom right on the porch. Before the lunch we tried several ways to figure out how to bring the starter as closer as we can to the porch floor. In the afternoon, I went back alone, and thought through.... Eureka! I know what to do. I leave first row of siding face down to the floor. Then nail starter right on there. Then pull the siding up. This bring first bottom right on the floor. But here is the problem, if the piece is too short, it's too hard to bend the side and force in to the corner piece. So this is what I did. I cut first line shorter the width it can lay down. This makes easier to bend to put it into the place. But I can see the very first one is shorter than it supposed to be. I thought nobody notice unless I tell that person. However, Josh realized it..... His eye sight is not wonderful, but he see these things....

お昼ご飯の前にもう一つややこしいところが。ポーチの北側の壁。小さなスペースだけど，なんとかうまく隠したい。いろいろ試したあげく、パネル一枚の上に半パネルでうまくごまかし，次のパネルをポーチの床の真上に来るパネルとつなげることができた。昼食の前にどうすればスターターを床のすぐ上につけれるかいろいろ試してみたもののなかなか。。。午後一人でもう一度考えてみる。ユリイカ！結局最初のパネルをうつむきに床に並べ，その真上にスターターをつける。その後無理矢理パネルを引っ張って持ち上げとめると，この通り、ぴったし真上にとめれた。でもこれを短いスパンのところですると，パネルが短すぎて曲げれない。これでは角の部品の隙間におさめられない。ここでとった策は、一番下に来る板の形の部分だけ前に倒せる長さに切る。折り返しのない板一枚分なら無理矢理曲げることができる。こんな小さな部分だし，言わない限り誰も気づかないはず。と思いきや。。。ジョッシュが早速気づく。眼鏡かけてそんなに視力よくないのに，こういうことはよく見ている。

Day 95

This is our back door from mud room, dining room, and kitchen window.

First thing we did today was to put the scaffolding up. And screwed treated 2x8 under the patio door on south gable second floor. This would be a place to hook floor joists for the porch we are planning to build next summer. For now we just needed that one board, so we can nail siding around. It wasn't so easy to work with this long 2x8 on this height on this scaffolding in this strong sunlight. After we finished this we decided to move to easier north side in the shade.

まず最初に，これは裏口とダイニングとキッチンの窓。

今日最初にしたことは足場を作ること。で，南側の２階の寝室にあるパティオドアの下に化学処理された２x８をぶっといネジで固定すること。ここに来年の夏にバルコニーを作るときに床を支えるジョイストをつけることになる。ま、とりあえず今この板を一枚つけておくとこの周りにサイディングをはれるので後々するよりやりやすい。でも，この直射日光の中高いところで，不安定な足場で，やたらと長いこの板を操るのはそう簡単ではなかった。とりあえず板を付けたところで，日陰で簡単な北側に移ることにした。
One siding is 12 feet. It doesn't reach all the way. So we need to overlap. Now I know this trick. You overlap away from the most viewed side. So this north wall, the siding closer to west the entrance side is overlapping the one on east side. The photo on top is the view from west. Hmm seemless! This photo below is the view from east. You can see the seem.

サイディング一枚は１２フィートなので，壁の幅を覆うのに途中で継ぎ足さなくてはならない。継ぎ足すときに人が流れる方向や，視線を考慮して，視線の元にある方のサイディングが上にかぶさるようにする。これが技だったのね。上の写真は北の壁を入り口のある西側から撮ったところ。継ぎ目が見えない！下の写真は東側から撮った。継ぎ目が写っているはず。

Day 94

Weekend! While the weather is still nice, Bob and Marilyn went to camping for the weekend. This house project kept them away from summer camping this year. We were glad finally they could go at least one. While Bob is not here we were continue working on siding. It went pretty well. F-channel for soffit hasn't delivered. So we needed to quit before we covered all around window.

週末です！まだ気候がいいうちにとボブとマリリンは週末キャンプに行きました。毎年夏は何度もキャンプに行くようだけど、今年はこの家のおかげでこれまで行けなかった。最悪一回でも行ってもらえてよかった。ボブが留守の間、私たちは外壁の作業を続ける。順調に進んだ。軒の天井をはるためのFチャンネルという部品がまだ届かないため、窓の一番上までは板をはれず、今日はおしまいにする。

To be honest, we enjoyed our alone time too. Because today was our first sixth month anniversary! We bought salmon, and avocado. Celebrate with Sushi roll! It was fun to make, yum to eat. Maybe we can do this on our moving party or something.

実を言うと、私たちも久しぶりの二人の時間を楽しみました。いつも気がついたときには記念日がすぎているが、今日は半結婚記念日！サーモンと邪道ながらアボカドを買ってきて巻き寿司を作った。楽しく作れて、舌も満足。これは引っ越しパーティーかなんかによいかも。

Day 93

One panel of the siding is a shape of two panels. And it is light and easy to handle. Once you start, it goes pretty quick. Everything just always confuse us at the beginning. I think even one person can do, but better to have two people working together, so you can do neater job.

In the afternoon, I worked on shorter piece next to the door where I can work alone. These are small pieces, but need to cut a lot. I think it take almost same amount of time to do bigger pieces. How is my excuse for this slow progress?

パネル一枚は板２枚分の形をしていて、プラスチックなので軽くて作業はしやすい。いつも新しい作業が始まると飲み込むまでややこしくて時間がかかるが、波に乗ったらかなり作業ははかどる。一人でもできる作業だが、二人でやった方がうまくできる。

午後になって、ドアの横の小さなスペースを一人で埋めていく。パネル自体は短く切って小さいけど、いっぱい切らないとだめだし、結局大きなパネルを張っていくのと同じくらい時間がかかる、と言い訳してみたり。
Around 4:30 the parade started at "main street" of Barnard. This is a part of home coming. Students made floats for this parade a day before. I was expected to see their gun shoot like movie, but didn't happen. Brass band and flag girls were next.

４時半くらいからバーナードの”メインストリート”でホームカミングの一貫のパレードがあった。前日に学生たちが完成させた山車もパレードに参加。よくできたのもあれば、訳の分からないものもあった。映画のようにまず鉄砲を撃ってから始まるのかと思いきや、ただ持っているだけだった。その後、吹奏楽と旗ダンスの行列。
Then old cars came next. Some of them I saw people riding on the street before. Then floats were pulled behind of truck with lots of candy flying around.

その後、自慢のビンテージカーたち。そのうちのいくつかは実際に道を普通に走っているのを何度か見たことがある。その後飴ちゃんが飛び交う中山車がトラックにひかれてくる。

In the end football players on the fire truck. They won today! Josh told me when he was young, cowboys(?) on horses were part of parade. That would be cool. I wish it would be happen again since people have horses around here.

最後にアメフトのチームが消防車に乗って流れる。今晩の試合で、彼らはきちんと勝ちました！ジョッシュが参加していたころはカウボーイ達も自慢の馬に乗って行列していたらしい。この辺は馬を持ってる人もたくさんいるので、それが復活してくれるといいな〜。

Day 92

This is another big step. Our siding delivered! We got oxford blue for main part, darker grayish blue for the corners, and around windows.
次への第一歩、外壁の材料サイディングが届きました！メインにはオックスフォードブルー、角や窓，ドアの周りにはそれよりもくらいブルーグレー。
Of course we tried right away. We decided to start from east side. It is easier, and good place to practice. First make a chalk line 1 1/2" away from bottom of the board. Then, nailed some starter line up to that line we just made. We hook first row here. Use level on the over hung, and find the height that is 90 degree from tip of over hung. F-channel what we will hook soffit will come there. Corner posts will be 1/4" under there to 3/4" lower from starter. We need to nail J-channel around windows and doors. Corner post, J-channel are not only for decoration, but also to catch the edge of sidings, so the of siding doesn't get flappy. We were looking for a piece supposed to come under the window, but couldn't find something looks like it. So we asked Drake, and found out the piece we used for the starter was the thing that come under the windows. Starter they sent to us was white metal piece..... hmmmm need to go back to start point... The actual starter is different height, so we needed to have longer corner post, too. Well, tomorrow should go easier.
もちろん早速とりかかる。一番簡単で，裏側なので失敗しても目立たないということで，東側から始めることにした。まずは壁板の下から１１／２インチのところに線を引く。で，スタータという一番始めを引っ掛けるための帯をその線に沿って取り付ける。レベルを軒の先っぽにあて，９０度の地点を探す。そこに軒先の天井にあたるソフィットという物を取り付けるための部品Fチャンネルをつけることになる。壁の角を覆う部品はその地点から１／４インチ下がったところから始まり、スターターの３／４インチ下で終わる。窓やドアの周りにはJチャンネルという物を使う。角を覆う部品やJチャンネルなどは飾りなだけではなく，機能も含めた部品。サイディングの端がひらひらしないように囲う役目がある。窓の下にはもう一つ別の部品がくるはずだが，それらしい物はどこにも見当たらない。困ったときはドレイクに配達の確認の電話をしてみる。で，何がわかったかというとスターターと思って使っていた部品が実は窓の下に来る部品と判明。スターターは金属の帯だった。う〜ん振り出しに戻る。スターターは高さが違うので角を覆う部品も少し長いのに取り替えなければいけない。まあ，明日はもう少し楽にいくはず。

This week was home coming week in Barnard. It is the day foot ball team is going to play at their own ground. Seems like a big event for this town. Josh will judge air rock at the school, so I went to see it, too. Yhay cheer girls! I never had cheer girls in my school, so I like watching them jumping around with high pitch voice. Senior won air rock. It was obvious they plan well, and practice more than others. It was fun night.
今週はバーナードのホームカミングと言われるアメフトチームがホームで試合をする週だった。それに合わせていろんなお楽しみのある，ここバーナードではビッグイベントの週だった。ジョッシュが学校でエアーロックの審査員を頼まれたので私も夕方から一緒に見に行った。やた！チアガール！私の周りにはチアガールがなかったので黄色い声でぴょんぴょん飛び回るチアガールを見るのは楽しい。エアーロックの優勝者は高校３年生のクラス。他と比べると明らかに案を練って，練習を積んでいた。思いのほか面白かった。

Day 91

In the weekend we installed all windows and doors, but we didn't finished all process. We still need to screw in each sash, tape all around outside, push the insolation into the gap, cut the shim boards we put around doors. For the patio door, we still need to do some more additional process to finish install.

週末に窓とドアの設置をした物の，作業を完成させるにはまだしばらくかかる。まだそれぞれの窓枠にネジを停め，きちんとまっすぐになるように調整し，外側四辺にさらにテープを留め，ラフオープニングとの隙間に断熱材を押し込む、ドアの周りに使った詰め板を短く切り落とす、などの作業がある。パティオドアに至ってはそれに加えてまだいくつかしなければいけない作業がある。
