Day 82

Today we worked on the cricket. Since this is the place 3 angles meet, first we tried with cardboard. Oh, it is pretty simple than I thought. This will take care this water gather pocket.

今日は、西の切妻の北側、ポーチの南側にクリケットというものを作った。三面がそれぞれ違う角度で交わる部分なので、まずは段ボールで型を作り、その後板に起こした。先日ディックが来たときは、えーそんなややこしいこと！と思っていたが、何とも単純なことだった。これで、この水の集まるポケットを改善できるはず。
Then, we started wrapping house! This wrapping plastic is kind of like just a big tarp. This will cover gaps around house.

Hmmm, yes, this is a good material for them to make billboard everywhere.

その後家全体を覆う作業に入った！これは大きなブルーシートみたいなもので、壁の隙間などを覆ってくれる。

う〜ん、これはそこら中ででっかい看板のように会社の名前を売る絶好の機会ではないか。
Also we got windows, the other day. We carried them inside before the rain. But these are HEAVY!! We have a patio door for second floor master bedroom. But we plan to make patio later, maybe next summer. So we need to work pretty up high. It is impossible to install this with glasses in. We asked local carpenter to give us a tip. We can take the glasses off, and install flames lightly. Then put the glasses back. Make sure the flame is perfect square. Then attached well. Well, I think that's the way to do for us who don't have nice tool like lifter. We are slow, but very very careful, maybe too much careful amateur carpenters.

先日、ついに窓なども配達されてきました！雨が降る前に家の中に移したのだけど、これがむちゃ重い！２階の寝室の大きなパティオドアが一番の難関。パティオは多分来年の夏に手をかけるので足場の不安定な高いところでの作業になる。これは無理無理！ということで地元の大工さんに電話でどうしてるか聞いてみた。まず窓を外してしまい、フレームだけを軽く止め、そこに窓を戻してゆがみを完璧に直してからきちんと固定する。これはリフターもないし、ひ弱な人力で対処するしかない私たちに残された手か。ま、私たちは亀のように遅いけど必要以上に細かいことに気をつけるので大丈夫か。

Day 81

After whole day of sleeping, I got better. We put up look out rafters on both side, and finish putting facia for the porch too. Now we thought it is all ready for the roofing day on Saturday. Then Dick came by and told us about cricket we should make. It goes to the place that north valley and porch side wall meets between west gable and porch roof. Make extra angle for the roof. So water and/or snow doesn't stay there and leak into house. I can imagine rain is jumping around and make sound like cricket there. It make s sense. But sounds complicated. We will bring card board to try first. But that will be a next project.

丸一日寝倒したおかげで回復しました。ポーチの軒の端にくる最後の垂木をつけ、鼻隠しのでポーチの屋根を囲い、後は屋根張りの土曜日を待つだけ！と思っていたところにディックが様子を見に来てくれた。で、西の切妻とメインの屋根、ポーチの壁が全部集まるあのややこしいスポットに、クリケットたるものを土曜日までに作ることに。雨や雪がたまって家の中に侵入してこないように屋根の角度をうまく水が流れるように変えるようにする。クリケットとはコウロギ見たいなもの。そこで水がはね上がって音を作る様子からか？なるほど必要かと思うが、やたらとややこしそう。まずは段ボールで試しに作ってみて、その形を板に移すことに。ま、それは明日以降の作業。

Day 80

I was take it easy today since I had been coughing so much. Bob was working alone today. He covered north side porch wall. Put up rest of facia on north gable. While he is taking time alone, he could think through what we need. He worked even very detail places I would never think of. Sounds like it work out good.

しばらく咳が続いていたために私は今日は休ませてもらうことにした。ということで、今日はボブ一人が作業をしていた。北の切妻の残りの鼻隠しの板をつけ、ポーチの北側の側壁をつけた。一人なので、ゆっくりと一個ずつ何か見落としてないか考えれてよかったらしい。その結果、いくつか思いもよらないような小さいけど必要なことをカバーしてもらえた。

Day 79

Since we accomplish a lot yesterday, we decided to take a morning off. It was nice we can sleep in. We worked on north gable today. The ground is higher here than south side. We thought it is easier since we don't need to climb up ladder too much. However, it was not too high enough to stand the ladder comfortably, and not low enough to use smaller ladder we have. The only choice we had was to use long ladder laying uncomfortably low without scaffolding, and hold the bottom with some stakes, at least first one. We decided to do bits of pieces, so it is easy to handle.

昨日は思ったよりはかどったので、午前中は休みにした。久々に朝眠りこけれてよかった。今日は北の切妻を仕上げる。南側よりも土地が上がっているのではしごをそこまでのばさなくてもよいし、やりやすいと思っていたが、この長いはしごでは長過ぎ、短いはしごでは届かない中途半端な高さだった。残された道は長いはしごを、足場をのせずにビビるほど浅く立てかけるしかない。そこで地面に杭を打ち滑らないように、壁に六ツ割を打ち付けはじめの一段をこなした。扱いやすいように、一枚板を使わずに、短いパーツで取り付けていくことにした。
We did it! Now the roof covers on Saturday, then our house will be all covered!!

外壁完成！土曜日に屋根の残り半分をしてもらうると、外側はカバーでき、次の作業に移れる。

Day 78

Since Josh can work on house on weekend, we decided to do boxing the gables instead of finishing up porch. Yesterday we drove to st Joseph to rent scaffolding and jacks for the long ladder. So we can comfortably(!?) boxing there even if it is pretty high.

St Joseph is a bigger town about 30 minutes drive from here Barnard. It's famous for pony express, Jesse James. You can often see in western movies. Because of American non-sense job in the past to take down rail road system, it is not big like it used to be except shopping mall in north side. But actually the downtown where doesn't have many business any more have lots of beautiful victorian huge old houses heavy brick buildings. There is the old bank that is in the movie "Paper Moon", too. Unfortunately, it seems disintegrate little by little, but It is neat interesting town for me.

週末は筋肉ジョッシュもいるので、ポーチは置いといて、切妻の板付けをすることにした。昨日セントジョセフという町まで二本のはしごに取り付けられる足場とそのためのジャックを借りにいった。これで楽ちんに（？）壁をつけれるはず。

セントジョセフはここバーナードから３０分くらいのとこにある、大きめの町。西部劇にはよくでてくる町で、またアメリカの郵便システム、ポニーエクスプレスが始まったところ。ジェシージェームズが住んでたところ。ほかのアメリカの多くの町と同様、線路を取っ払ってしまうという大失敗をしたため、北にあるショッピングモール以外は廃れていってしまっているけど、今はバーなどしかないダウンタウンの方が私は面白い。ダウンタウンには割とたくさん昔の立派なビクトリアン調のお屋敷が残っていて、映画ペーパームーンの銀行のビルなどもまだ残っていて渋い。
Because our roof is 45 angle, it wasn't too bad. To reach the top, we extend the ladders maximum. Then the ladders get wobbly and shaky. We nailed scrap boards to the wall, so ladder won't slide down. And now we have caller ties. it helps. One person stand on caller tie, and hold boards together. Also that person can reach very top to nail. Other person stand outside on the scaffolding. And last person cuts the boards and passed to the others. It was a good team work.

屋根は４５度と簡単に切れるので思っていたより大変ではなかった。一番上の列をつけるためにはしごをめいいっぱいのばしたものの、グラグラでブレて恐ろしい。そこで壁に短い六ツ割を打ち付けて滑って倒れてしまわないよう固定することにした。以前と違い今はカラータイという屋根を固定するための板が天井として並んでいるので、やりやすい。一人がカラータイの上で板を支えたり、一番頂点の釘を打ったりする。一人はもちろん外の足場に立ちメインで作業をする。もう一人は２階にとどまり、板をいわれたサイズに切り、後の二人に託す。なかなかのチームワーク。
We got south gable, west gable covered. It is less light now. This process made us feel better. We can feel the day we can move in is getting close!

南と西の切妻が塞がったので、少し薄暗くなった。いつまでたっても終わらないと思っていたけれど、引っ越しの希望の光が見えてきた。

Day 77: front and back view

This is the front view of our house. This west gable and porch gave us much more interesting look than our initial plan. Actually I am very impressed by ourselves. This is way better than I thought we could do. When we left Chicago and Japan saying everybody that we will build our house by ourselves, I don't think anybody include me fully trusted us be able to do it. When we brought our initial plan to Dick, it was very very simple house. Like the view from back.

これは正面から見たところ。西の切妻とポーチのおかげで最初の計画と比べてずっと面白くなった。実際，自分たちにずいぶん感嘆している。思ったよりもずっとずっとよくやってると思う。シカゴを離れるときや，日本を発つとき、みんなに自分らで家作るねんと言ってきたけど，自分も含めて多分誰もがほんまにできんのか？と思ってたと思う。初めてディックに見せたプランは何ともシンプルなプランだった。この裏側のような，子供の描く家のような、ただの屋根とただの壁だけの家。
Flat wall and flat roof. We were not sure how much we can do. We also planed to use trusses to make it easier. However Dick was keep telling us about appearance too. We didn't change inside plan much. We brought both front room 2' wider. So it gives us depth to the entrance. Also we can get little bit more room for both front rooms without using lots of extra lumbers. To have more room in second floor, we decided to do stick construction not using trusses. To have more light and little bit more room in our master bedroom, we changed plan to make a small gable there. That is also give us a face of the house toward front. We was going to make small porch in front, but he suggested to make it bigger. Now we can put swing, table, sofa, etc, and still have a room to move around. Since it is face to front yard, it will be a good place to hung out. It is not a big house, but we thought through well, and I think we have everything we want for our comfort. We are really looking forward to move in.

自分たちでどこまでできるかわからなかったし，できる限り簡単に，屋根もトラスという既に組み上がったものを買って，一階の壁にのせるだけの予定だった。ディックは何度も住居スペースのことはともかく，外見がどうなるかも言ってくれた。表側の部屋を２フィート外に出すことで，入り口が立体的になり，見た目に面白くなる。しかももちろん，そんなに木材を増やさなくても部屋が広くなる。２階にもう少しスペースができるように，トラスじゃなく、スティック建築でできるように私たちにできる自信がつくまで何度も説明してくてた。そして，メインの寝室により光が入るように，また，少し広くなるように西の切妻を計画に加えた。これで表側に家の顔ができ、見た目に良くなった。ポーチは元々小さい，日本のベランダみたいな感じで作る予定だったのが、大きくするよう推されたおかげでスイングが置けたり、ソファーや小さいテーブルを置いても動き回れるスペースになった。表の庭に面してるのでゆっくり季節を味わえる場所になった。大きな家ではないけど、何度も何度も考え直して，自分たちの欲しい物は全部詰まった家になってると思う。あ〜早く引っ越したい。

ま、その前に、
We worked on north side lookout and small wall of the porch. This side is different from south side. We want our side wall to be flush to the beam. So we need to bring 2" out from last rafter. After long thinking time we figured out how to fill that gap. We did everything we can do from down stairs. When we moved to upstairs, in some reason we forgot what we need to do and start adding extra woods. That's why we have so many scrap wood here in this photo. When we got conscious again, we started from took off some woods we just nailed on, and start over. It's kind of interesting that when we switch the sight, we switch the thing we were just thinking.

This is south side of the porch. West gable roof and main roof, and side wall meet up in this corner, and the roof of this porch will cover some part.

北側の軒と小さな側壁の作業を進める。昨日した南側とは少し違うので，改めて案を練らないといけない。側壁と桁の端を同じにしたいので，２インチの隙間を埋める案を出し合う。しばらく考えた後，これでいけると一階でできる作業をして，２階に移った。２階に移動したとたんなぜかしら何をしなあかんかったかすっかり忘れ，必要のない板をてきぱきと打ち付けてしまった。上の写真にいっぱいいろんな板がが打ち付けてあるのはそのため。全部打ち付け終えた後，はっと気づき、今度は打ち付けたばかりの板をはがすところからやり直し。なんでいっつも景色が変わったとたん、考えていたことまで切り替わってしまう。下の写真はポーチの南側。この角で、西の切妻の屋根とメインの屋根、ポーチの側壁がであう。この上にかぶさるように軒がくる。

Day 76

Today we will make a place called lookout. We will put three 2x4 for one side to hung outside rafter. We cut off notch the size of 2x4 on two rafters from the end. Nailed the 2x4 attached to 3 rafters each. We will put 2x6, and 1x6 facia in the end of this 2x4. But before we attach that we did side wall for the porch roof. This is a small section, so doesn't need to be perfectly square and every 16", but need studs enough to make this wall steady. Put boxing board there. This is the place 3 roofs are gather together. We were not sure for a while, but when we see this it was obvious what we need to do.

今日はルックアウトと呼ばれる部分を作る。軒を支えるために屋根の両側にそれぞれ三本２x４をつける。２x４のサイズの切り込みを垂木２本に作り，３本の垂木と固定する。この先に軒の先に来る２x６と１x６の鼻隠しをつけるのだが，その前にメインの屋根とポーチの屋根の隙間を埋める小さな壁を作っていく。小さな範囲なので、きちんと垂直がでてなくても，絶対に１６インチ毎じゃなくても壁がしっかりと固定できたら大丈夫。ここは３つの屋根が出会うところ。どうなることかと思っていたけれど，ここまで来たらどうなるか誰の目にも明らか。
