Happy Birthday Josh

 Today's birthday boy is Josh!  I made a lemon cake using his drawing on one of his book "Driven By Lemon". I don't bake. This is almost my first one. So I think I did good job. I have never really decollate cake either. It was fun using food coloring. It actually give me a same feeling with glazing my ceramics. Maybe we can start a cake business with Josh's drawing.
今日のバースデイボーイはジョッシュ。ジョッシュの「Driven By Lemon」という本にちなんでレモンヘッドボーイのデコレーションのレモンケーキを焼いた。ちなみに私はケーキはほとんど焼いたことがないのでなかなか良い出来と自画自賛。フードカラーを買って粉を混ぜて作ったフロストと混ぜて色を作って表面にのせていくのは、私が陶器の釉薬をかける作業と全く一緒。結構楽しめたし、これからジョッシュが絵を描くケーキビジネスを始めれるかも。

 Last year I made whiskey bottle and whiskey glasses for him. This year, I made Nova Stealth book mark. I didn't realize I made it for Japanese books which you read from right to left. I realize American books are read opposite. Well, it's ok.
去年はウイスキーボトルとグラスにエッチングをしたセットをプレゼントした。今年はジョッシュのもう一冊の本「Skyscrapers of the Midwest」のキャラクターの一つであるロボットのブックマークを作った。作った後に日本の本用に作ってしまったことに気づく。日本の本は右から左に読むが、アメリカは左から右だった。まあいいけどね。

House Warming Party!

We have been building this house since June 6th last year. Finally we got to the point doing house warming party! Thank you all for joining us! We got maybe 30, 40 people came. We didn't know this house can hold that much people. Glad floor didn't fall off. I know some people asking me to take photos. But when I remember, it was after the storm. It always happen, sorry. So the photos I got here is kind of chill out party which was actually nice. 

去年の６／６からこの家を建て始め、ついに引っ越しパーティーをするに至りました！予想以上に３、４０人ほど来てもらえました。ありがとう。この家にこんなに人が収まるとは思ってなかった。床も抜けずに無事終わりました。何人かに写真アップしてといわれていたのは片隅で覚えていたけれど、いざ行動に起こせたのは嵐が去った後。いつも通りシャッターチャンスは逃してしまった。ので、撮れた写真は人が減ってなんだかゆったりしているところ。

We had first time kids and dogs running around in this house. I see that's how kids play with stairs. They liked hung out in movie room. 

この家も初めて子供達と犬との洗礼に会いました。そういえば子供ってこうやって階段で遊ぶねんな〜。ムービールームに出たり入ったりなんだか楽しそうにばたばた走り回ってました。

We have been living in this house since January. But this house was still a lot more under construction, so we only had minimum stuffs we need just to live. But finally we brought boxes of things we had in Josh's parents' basement. Most of boxes were opened first time after the fire we had in Chicago. It was like opening christmas gift. We used to live in small apartment, and had only one book shelf. I know it was full, but in some reason it was only capable for maybe half of things. So we made another book shelf in hurry. It is also full now. To have our personal comfortable things around feels wonderful. Finally we feel like we got a house, even if we were here all the time. 

実際この家には１月から住んではいたものの、床板もなく工事中で、最小限の荷物しか持ってきていなかった。ついにジョッシュの実家の地下室に山積みになっていたほとんどのものをパーティー前の週末に運びました。ほとんどの箱はシカゴで巻き込まれた火事の後、あわててつめた後はじめて開けたので、クリスマスプレゼントをあけるみたいで楽しかった。なんでわざわざこんなもの詰めたんやろうというゴミもたくさんあったけど。以前は小さなアパートに住んでいて、本棚も一つしかなかった。それはぱんぱんだったってのは知ってたけど、とりあえずそこに全部収まってはいた。ところが、今回は本もおもちゃもあふれかえって、半分くらいしか箱を空けれない。ということで急遽もう一つ大きな本棚を作り、なんとかパーティーまでには箱を撤去できた。その本棚ももう既にパンパン。なんで？自分の好きな物、大事にしてるものが目の届くところにあるってなんて落ち着く。今までもここに住んでいたけれど、初めて自分たちの家に住んでいるという実感が出た。

 To celebrate us got a house to live not to build, I made a curtain for my window of the drawing Josh did for this house warming party. This bench will be a nice afternoon nap bench.
建てるためのではなく、住むための家ができたという区切れ目として、桃子窓のカーテンに、ジョッシュのドローイングを刺繍したカーテンを作った。西日を遮って心地いい昼寝の場所になった。

Holy Cows!

I woke up early in the morning with feeling of hunger. While I was snacking I saw big beef moving around our yard. Hey it's not a beef, it's a cow in our yard! They are eating my garden!! I didn't know what to do, so I watched for a while. Then there are more and more. Five cows the most at the time!
This few days we found some poops in our yard. It wasn't huge poop. So we couldn't figure what animal was. But the cows came in to our yard was all kids. I see... We knew there is a hole in our fence on south side of the house. But since it was so convenient to go to next land, and we thought it would be ok in some reason we kept it. Recently they moved in to our next land, and I guess they thought same thing "how convenient, there is a hole."
お腹がぺこぺこで朝早くに目が覚めてしまった。ベッドから抜け出して朝ご飯前のおやつをつまんでいると頃、庭に大きなステーキが動いているではない！？ここには入って来れないはずの牛が畑の草を食べてる〜！どうしたものかわからなかったので、とりあえずしばらく眺めてみたものの、どんどん数が増えて、全部で５匹もうろうろしてる！ここ何日か小さいながらも牛っぽいうんこが落ちてたのでまさかとは思っていたけれど、入ってきたのは全部子供の牛だった。なるほど。家の南側のフェンスに穴があることは気づいていたのだけれど、となりにいくのに何とも便利なことと、なぜかこの穴は大丈夫だろうとみんなで決めつけてしまっていたことでほったらかしにしていた。最近となりに引っ越してきた牛子さん達も多分「まあ、なんて便利」と同じことを考えていたことでしょう。

After all, I decided to go out alone to let them go back. When they saw me in back yard walking towards them, they were so surprised just jumped over the barbed wire. Oh, cows supposed not to do that! Anyway, I win. Went back inside, and look at the window, then found another cow just came in. Now I am a experienced human, went back to back yard again. However, he was surprised and went to the other way. Since he just stood there looking at me without knowing what to do, I don't know what to do either. I went closer little by little, but kept certain distance. In outside of fence there are more and more cows gather together as audiences. And another big cow came through the gate over the fence. All of them were staring at me. Oh no! He saw I shrank back, so start eating my garden with confidence. .....I lost my human authority........ I gave them cuss word in Japanese and left. Completely lost...
結局、一人で外に出て牛達を隣に戻してみようと決心、裏庭まで歩いてみた。私と目が合うと、牛達は驚いてフェンスの上をジャンプして逃げていった。牛は飛べないはずじゃないのか。ともかく勝利。家に戻ってもう一度確かめると、新たに一匹はいってきたところ。もう経験済みなのですぐさま庭に戻って牛を追いにいった。ところが今度はびっくりして穴と反対側に逃げてそこで止まってしまった。彼がどうしていいかわからず動かないので、私もどうしたものかわからない。とりあえず少しずつ間合いをつめたもののさすがにそこまで近くには行きたくない。そうこうしているうちに、フェンスの向こう側でか観客が続々と集まり、もう一方のフェンスの外にはゲートをくぐった大きな牛と、私を取り囲んで全員がこっちを見ている。ひょえ〜。たじろいだ私を見てかれは自信を持って畑のものを食べだしてしまった。人間としての権威は完全に消え失ってしまった。。。敗北を確信した私は悔しいかな日本語で悪口をいってとりあえず見て見ぬ振りをしようと決めた。

Actually human doesn't even have authority in country in the first place. We just need to live together I guess. Even in the house, We have two two-legs and two four-legs. At this point it is already even numbers. We are going to have another human soon, but for a while he would be consider as four-legs. Hmmmm.....
そもそも、こんな田舎には人間の権威などというものは存在しない。動物が多い中棲み分けをするしかない。家の中でさえ、私たち二本足が二人と、四本足が二匹でタイの状態。もうすぐもう一人人間が家族に加わる予定だか、しばらくの彼は四本足の類いやし。。。う〜む。

Storage bench for my window

There is a small window in library/living room. This is known as Momoko's window. There was a opinion not to have this window because it is just make this room and house asymmetry. However, this is the reason I convinced to keep. I always wanted to have a nice bench that also you can lay down next to the window in full sunshine. 

リビングルームに桃子の窓として通っている小さな窓がある。デザイン的にバランスが崩れるのでこの窓をなしにしたら？という意見が何度かいろんな人と相談する上で持ちあがったのだが、私は頑として意見を曲げなかった。窓際にあるゴロゴロもできるベンチでひなたぼっこってのが夢だったんですもの。

 I made a frame with 2x4, and board around it. I also wanted to make it as a storage to hide my mess. So I made a space in the back and side in order to open the box even with the thick cushion.
フレームは残っていた２x４で作り、側面はベニヤでカバーした。私はがらくたがたくさんあるのでそれを隠せるような箱を作るというのも目的の一つ。ということで分厚いクッションでもふたを開けれるように左右と後ろにスペースを作った。

I used combination of  2x12 and 2x6 for the lid cushion just because there were left over from the construction. So it is kind a heavy, but not too bad than we imagined after I attached one side with hinges. Covered the big sponge with cotton fabric to ease the edge and make round corner first. Then cover it with the fabric. Finished up with the nice buttons I made from stones I found and beads. How fancy is that!  Our cats like this bench.

座面には１xの板を使いたかったのだが、結局残っていた２x１２と２x６の組み合わせで作ることにした。なので座面自体はかなり重いのだが、一方を蝶番で本体に取り付けたところ、悪くない。まず大きなスポンジを布上の綿で包みスポンジの角をなくし、丸みを帯びたクッションにする。それから布でくるみ、周りには拾った石やビーズで作った鋲をつける。なんとファンシーな！ひなとウィンストンのお気に入りの場所になった。

Then I made back cushion with thiner sponge on the board. Then hooked to the screw on the wall studs. I will show you my mess only this time, just to show that there is a storage space underneath. 

背もたれは薄い目のクッションで同じように作り、間柱まで届く壁のねじに引っ掛けて固定。今回だけ中のごちゃごちゃには目をつぶって、こんな感じで開きます。

July 4th and July 7th

This year July 4th, we went to Mazingo lake to see fire works. Unlike other fire works I've ever been, it was not crowded at all.  Maybe because it has been very hot these days, and was really hot July 4th. But it turned out very nice comfy evening. To be honest I didn't have a big expectation, but fire works was nice too. 

７月４日はアメリカの独立記念日。至る所で大きな花火があがる。一週間ほど前から町には大きな簡易のテントがいくつも建てられ、この期間だけ花火を買うことができる。この時期しか買えないというのは残念だが、こんなん個人で買っていいの？という大きな花火も買える。それはともかく、今年は近くのマジンゴ湖にいった。ここ最近ヒートアドバイザリーが出るほど気温が高く、７月４日も日中はかなり暑かったためか、今までいったどの花火大会よりも空いていて、夜は気温も下がりなかなかよかった。花火自体も思いの他華やかなのがいっぱい打ち上げられてなかなか満足した夜だった。花火が終わった後はみんな一斉に国歌を熱唱していた。そのうち国歌も覚えないといけないんやろうな〜一応。

July 7th is the day called Tanabata in Japan. This is the only day Magpie (Cygnus) in the sky can make a bridge over the Milky Way with its wings, and Orihime (vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair) can meet up there. There are various stories of this day. In one of the story, Orihime is called Momoko-hime( peach child princess) which is my name! Usually you decorate bamboo tree with papers, and write wishes. In some reason Orihime and Hikoboshi can make our wishes come true. Maybe because they are so happy to meet each other. 

そして７月７日には、無理矢理ジョッシュにも参加させ、七夕祭りをした。今までは笹の代用にパイナップルを使ったりと無理矢理も無理矢理だったけど、今年は庭の木に飾った。昔はもっといろんな飾り付けが作れてたと思ったけど、何種類かしか思い出せない。知らなかったけど、織り姫は別名桃子姫ってのもあったことが発覚。これは毎年続けなくては。

 This is also a fun day to do Nagashi Somen. Cut bamboo in half, and float thin cold noodle there. Of course this is for eat. Everybody stand in position with little bowl of soup, and pick them up, dip them, and eat them as much as you want. Hmmm yam. Someday I would like to do Nagashi Somen here.
本当は流しそうめんもしたかったけど、今年は断念。ちょっといつもより豪華な冷やしそうめんで我慢。強引にやっても一人が流して、一人が食べるだけになってしまうしな。こういうがんばらなあかんことはもう少し人数が増えてからにしよう。でもこっちの人はきもちわると思うか？！

We got a movie theater!

 This room will be a baby room someday. But we decided to make it as we planed initially at least for a while, like the room all adults' dreamed(?) to have a movie theater in your house. This is the only carpeted room we have. And light is adjustable. We made a better shelf. Projector on the ceiling. However, we don't have any furnitures. Every night we bring our bedroom pillows and have a pajama party. It is also a adult game room.
この部屋はいつの日か赤ちゃんの部屋になってしまうのだが、とりあえずほんの少しの間だけでも計画してように、すべての大人達が夢見る映画館部屋として作った。この部屋がこのうち唯一の絨毯部屋。天井灯は暗さを調節でき、棚は作り付けのをよい板で、プロジェクターは天井から吊るした。しかしながらこの部屋には家具がいっさいない。毎晩枕を持ち込みゴロゴロしながらのパジャマパーティーをする部屋。大人のゲーム部屋でもある。

Our garden with minimum effort

This is my garden the first time I ever done. Actually Bob tilled here for me.... Initially it was the square without any weeds. Since  I am putting minimum effort, it looks much much wild than this photo now. However, we are getting lettuce, mini tomatoes, basil, cilantro, sage, hot peppers, and green onions. We will have bigger tomatoes, burdock, edamame, green beans, leeks, and jalapeño hopefully. Since I don't have any idea about gardening our veggies are still so little even if we are getting share from neighbor. But that's ok. I am so happy they came out. I had some other asian veggies I planted, but the seeds were too old, didn't come out. I had cucumber, too. But somebody ate them. Somebody might be them!

私の初めての庭。実はボブが最初にきれいに耕してくれました。最初は雑草の全くない四角だったのが、なるべく手間をかけずにおいしい野菜を食べるをモットーにしているため、今ではこの写真よりもずっとずっとワイルドに雑草が育ちその合間に小さく野菜が顔を出す感じ。それでもレタス、プチトマト、バジル、セージ、唐辛子、ネギがとれている。もうちょっとしたら普通サイズのトマト、牛蒡、枝豆、インゲン豆、ニラ、ハラペーニョがとれる予定。何の知識もなく適当に思いついたときに植えたため、ご近所にお裾分けをもらっているこの時期に、まだ私たちの野菜は発展途上もいいとこ。ま、でも芽を出してくれただけでも満足。他にもシソなど植えてみたものの、種が古すぎて出てこなかった。キュウリも何本かあったものの、誰かに食べられてしまった。誰かってのはこいつらか？！

We got deer brothers in our yard. Barbed wire doesn't mean anything to them. So free. Hope they don't killed by hunters. We also have humming birds. 

鹿の兄弟が遊びにきてます。牛が入らないようにしている鉄条網は鹿には全く意味なし。ハンターに殺されませんように。ハチドリも遊びにきてます。
